Is this a balls-ache, or doable? Seen a few youtube videos and it looks simple enough. Anyone had any bad experiences?

Yep it's easy, no need for a vice either, yes it's nice if you have one but I have always manged easily without one. you will need a craft knife, double sided tape ( available from the pro or online) a bottle of white spirit and a few rags. Take your time and you will be fine, just let them set overnight before using them.
First one can be a little frustrating but it really is easy enough once you get going an easy way to save a few quid and gives great satisfaction to have tacky brand new grips.
Get a good quality double sided tape. I was re-gripping some clubs the other week and ran out so I popped up to B&Q to get some. It was not like the good stuff that can be purchased for re-gripping. My grip would not slide over it properly and it ended getting stuck half way on, that was a grip being cut back off before it was even fully fitted.............:mmm:
But it is easy to do, I re-gripped everything in ym signature in 30 minutes.

Easy peasy lemon squeazy but I'm a lazy git. My pro doesn't carry a big range and so I tend to order via Gamola and pay him for labour to stick them on

Curved Stanley blades to cut the old grips off ( always cut away from yourself to prevent injury)
A decorators hot air gun can help to remove the old tape.
Plenty of videos on Youtube to show how it's done.
It's very satisfying replacing your grips yourself.

£20 a set. As I get the grips cheap on Gamola it works out cheaper. Truth be told he probably gives them to the assistant to do but as long they are fitted properly I don't care

I've never used a shaft protector.
I just buy the individual 2" strips of tape. As many as you need.

Only note of caution is that if you are fitting grips with reminders make sure you get the alignment right. Sounds obvious but.....
just ordered 2 grips for my wedges and the 14 club 2" tape and solvent kit. 12 quid delivered for the lot from gamola. that will do for me as also got 2 putters to regrip.
