With all the fuss over Rory (rightly so) the fact that a relatively unknown English pro - David Lynn (from Stoke I believe) - came second has all but been missed (by me certainly until a few hours ago). Now I haven't heard of the guy - but have now - and so will we all as his $865,000 prize money rockets him into the Top 50 World Ranking; an invite to next year's Masters; and puts him in strong contention for an automatic Ryder Cup team place.

So other than 'fantastic' what do we think about the Ryder Cup place. This could have been a fluke result - and he get's a place in the team (probably)? Is that right or fair to all the other European pros battling for a place in the squad? Will lack of knowledge of his game and temperament make him an outsider and mean he only gets to play his singles match?

Discuss...I am at the moment a bit
:mmm:

Hasn't he won on the European tour either this year or last year. Seems like a solid player that doesn't do much wrong, but certainly had the week of his life

He is 30 points behind Poulter in the last automatic Ryder Cup position, so he would probably need a win before cut off to make it in automatically. Don't think he'll get a pick.

Ok so did the saddo thing and went on wikipedia.

2 Professional Wins werer the 7 Team Erhverv Danish Open (Challenge tour event) and the 2008 KLM Open. The most obscure was the fact he won the Greek amateur championship!

EDIT: Has only ever played 2 majors, a T53 in the 2003 Open and his 2nd Place as the PGA

Seems like a decent enough guy but did anyone see his interview after Sundays round?
He was so deadpan it was unbelievable you'd have thought he just finished runner-up in a medal comp.

Maybe its just me but a I'd prefer a bit of charisma(and proven talent) on my Ryder Cup team so give me Poults anytime.

He lives in STOKE but is from ST HELENS MERSEYSIDE.

Is he Borrocks from St Helens. He was my mate at school and lived in Swinley, Wigan. We used to go running together and he was a bloody good goalkeeper before picking up the sticks. A natural athlete who was always going to do well. Good luck to him.

Is the points system not slightly flawed when a guy can have one good week and be that close to the Ryder Cup Team?

If I was one of the 'better known' guys in a qualification spot and got bumped by him I'd be a bit miffed. But then again if you have't done enough to qualify then you probably shouldn't be on the team.

Poulter is a dead cert to play. If he doesn't get the auto place then he's certainly done enough in my mind for a captains pick based on his current form and his past Ryder cup form.

I'd love to see a fully functioning Garcia in the squad but I honestly don't think his head is in the right place.

That's it - OK with Dave Lynn this win might not get him an automatic place - but if he wins again (going to have to be pretty soon mind) proving it was no fluke and get's a place then good luck to him - clearly on a run of form and handy to have in the team. But on another day - another player - such a win could get you straight into the team.

Well - I suppose that's the system - but it does seem a bit unfair on a European pro who may have had a good couple of years and ends up being bumped from the team by such a win.
