Custom Fitting or Custom Clubs?

Hi All,

I'm looking at replacing my clubs and everyone says I should get Custom Fitted Clubs because I'll never regret it. But, now that I've looked at it there seem to be centres which offer custom fitting of a standard set of clubs (eg checking which shaft would be best and altering the lie of a standard set of Mizuno, Callaway etc) or centres which offer to custom build a set of clubs just for you from component parts.

I'm a 17 handicapper of normal height, normal build with normal swing speed etc. Anyone got any advice about the merits of each approach?

It depends whether you have your heart set on a 'branded' set of sticks, like for instance Titleist, or whether you are happy paying less, but not having a known brand. Me? I'm a snob. I chose my irons, then had them c/f'ed. It was worth it to settle my mind as to what shafts, lie, grip and length was the best.

There is no such thing as normal everything, so fitting is worthwhile. Most manufacturers offer standard specs, but will adjust the lie, shaft, grip, length etc at the factory and get you a set out in a week or two.

All clubs are components at some stage, so there is no specific advantage, other than possibly cost, in going for Snake Eyes or one of those makes.

Thanks for the advice. IN fact one of the options I was offered (the build from scratch option) was going to use Snake Eyes (came well recommended).

But, I think I'd like to stick with mainstream (currently have TaylorMade but would happily look at Callaway, Mizuno, TaylorMade or Titliest).

So the new question is does a single 'Custom Fit' centre have all these to try or is it a case of going to a shop, trying them and then finding a custom fit centre for the clubs selected?

There are some places which do multiple brands. The Belfry has a custom fit service and there are some custom fitters dotted around the country that do multiple makes.

Trouble is that there may be more than one, or many, "right answers" to what suits you. You can probably find at least one model from each of those brands which will work for you, so personal preference is a consideration.

All of the 4 makes, along with Ping and Cleveland/Srixon have national fitting centres. Titleist are in Cambridgeshire, Ping in Lincolnshire, Cleveland/Srixon in Maidenhead, Taylor Made in Basingstoke, Callaway in Leatherhead, and Mizuno have places in Leatherhead, Wrexham and Cumbernauld.

It comes down to what you want, what your budget is and your golfing expectations. If you're serious about your game and want something like single figures then providing you don't call in for a major swing rebuild which will probably throw everything out, and have a fairly repeatable action then go for the C/F option. In particular these C/F guys will have many more shafts than most pro shops or AG etc and so can find the one that will give you optimum performance. From there the easy bit is choosing the head you like!
