Custom Fitting Experience

This maybe lengthy as I like to ramble!

Spent 1 1/2 hours this morning with Jamie at Pure Forged at Mearns Castle. First part was me wanting to have a go on the flight scope to check my yardages for each club in the bag and have the loft and lie checked and altered where needed. This would also give Jamie a chance to see my swing (horror show) and assess what sort of shafts are likely to be suitable for me.

That was all done and I now have a nice 6 page PDF for each club in the bag (emailed to me) showing shots hit, dispersion, club speed, smash factor etc.

What Jamie pointed out though was that my clubs are too short and that they are not upright enough and probably a smidgen too much offset on the heads that I am playing. Added to the fact they are regular and too heavy is probably the cause of me hooking the longer irons. This, as well as the swing. He also felt I'd benefit from thicker grips.

He narrowed it down to 3-4 potential shafts and got me to hit several shots with each to see what the response was like before narrowing it down further to just two. He also was asking for feedback from me about how I thought they felt and also paying particular attention to the grips on each of the different ones and wanting to know my thoughts on them. He basically must have close to 100 6 irons, all made up with different heads, shafts and grips. Obviously I didn't need to try all them.

He then saved the best until last. Pulled out a Miura CB57 (alert golfporn http://www.miuragolf.com/series57_cb57.asp ) a club I have been lusting after. It had one of the shaft options in it he'd thought would be suitable, albeit shorter than I need, but also a larger gripmaster golf grip. Thicker than I currently use, but he thought from the way I was swinging it would work for me. He wasn't wrong, no duffers or silly hooks, I could put my 'normal' swing on it and hit the sweet spot consistently. Even when I did hit slightly off centre ones there still seemed to be plenty of forgiveness. What I did notice, that I think helped massively, was the thicker and stickier grip. I wasn't taking the club as far back. On one of my normal swings, that I am trying to correct, I can just catch sight of the club in my left eye, due to me overswinging. The grip and feel of the shaft/club just seemed to help me get the club in a better position at the top and therefore not over swing as much. This without doubt contributed to the better ball striking, but I was doing that without having to think about it.

To prove a point about how important getting the correct shaft for your swing was, he pulled out the Miura Baby Blade, more golfporn, http://www.miuragolf.com/series57_blade.asp with one of the shafts he thought was suitable. Tiny head, but looks gorgeous at address. Anyway, his comments (to provoke a response) was to say 'you'll be lucky if you can hit it'. Suffice to say I nailed it without much effort and he had a wry smile on his face.

He must have seen 1000's of golfers over the years he has been doing this (including tour pro's who know what they are doing) and could figure out pretty quickly what was going to work for me.

Personally, I consider it money well spent, which will be discounted if I make an order with him for the clubs. I'll update further as I have asked him a couple of questions via email.

Sounds like youve had an awesome experience Daverollo. Im looking forward to mine on Saturday more and more. Im looking forward to trying some of the more exotic shafts and club builders now, ive been looking at the new Orka's and i can see a few forum members have sets of them. They look dreamy.

Are you going to pick yourself up these Miura's?! If you dont mind me asking what was the pricing like of the clubs?

Sounds like a great day, isn't it amazing the science involved at getting a tiny white ball in a hole !! Is there anyother sport that relies on this much science ?

The thing is, in my opinion, without going through the above experience to some sort of degree, the game isn't going to be enjoyable (we all know how frustrating it can be !!) a mate of mine had a triple heart bypass a few years ago, he was late 60's but hit a good ball, well, as a present for what he went through,he decided to treat himself to a new set of irons, i recommended he get them custom fitted, that wasn't something he was interested in, his only criterea was that they be Taylormade as that's what he had before so off we went to American Golf where he found a set of Burner irons on a special, didn't even hit a ball into the net, just purchased them and off we went - his ball striking and game were nowhere near as good as it was with his old clubs, i'm convinced that had he got something custom fitted then his game wouldn't have been as bad.

So, this morning i traveled to Charles Le Seur at Alderley Edge GC.

He had a few offerings for me to try, I tried the TM RSi1, Ping G30, Ping i, Srixon z545 and z745. He said they would be the best ones for what i was looking for. I tried a few different shafts, True Tempers, Nippon, KBS.

We identified that i would need my clubs to be 2° upright because of my ridiculously long limbs and posture. Then we looked at the gripsize, and again due to my gorilla hands i would need a Midsize grip.

After determining that we went to the different club heads in a stock shaft for each and i decided that the two Srixon irons suited me the most, looked the nicest and felt so amazing.
Then the shafts, so i tried 4 different shafts in those heads, Nippon Modus 120, KBS Tour, S300 and Nippon Exodus. The Nippon modus produced me with the best swing speed and just filled me with the most confidence as i was striking it well and the weight was fantastic.

Once I had gone through all of that an hour had gone by and i hit around 100 balls, we had a look at what set make up i should go for, we agreed on 5,6,7 in the Z545s and 8,9,PW in the Z745s. Due to needing a little more help on the mid irons but having enough confidence in my shorter irons to have the more muscle back design.

The Srixons were fantastic and all of the aftermarket extras didnt have any additional cost, so I have ordered a set and the fitting experience was absolutely fantastic. Also as a bonus, Charles has said that he will fit me for some wedges free of charge when my irons come it to make sure we have all the gapping correct further down the bag.

Delighted.

Happy days

Great stuff. Makes you wonder why folk spend hundreds of pounds on gear without getting proper help in working things out.

Mine might be ready for Wed/Thursday this week :)

Very interesting to read your experiences with custom fitting and has certainly opened my eyes to the fact that I've never been custom fitted for any of my irons despite the vendors claiming that I have.

It has certainly reinforced my view that I am definitely going to an independent club fitter for my next irons and/or wedges. That said, my teaching pro tells me my current gear's just fine for me at present, so may be a year or two before I get to treat myself to what sounds like a great experience.
