This not a question about the benefits of custom fitting, I fully intend get CF shortly but also going to book a playing lesson and follow with a block of lessons with one of the clubs pros.

My current irons, mizuno mx 15s were bought off the shelf in 2005, joined club in 2008 off 18 hc and have got down to 12 but back up to 14 now, probally only about 6 lessons ever.

Has anyone here got custom fit for new clubs closely followed by lessons or could my swing change so much after lessons that my CF is no longer valid and I could end up with unsuitable clubs?

Or is it an ideal time to take my game back to basics to strive towards single figures and do both?

Any thought, experiences or opinions?

Lessons, lessons, lessons.

Once you can hit it well then go and get a fit.

If you get fit then fix flaws you could just be undoing parts of the custom fit. The only exception is if you are well above or well below average height.

Both. I really can't see the point of having loads of lessons learning to play with standard clubs only to have a fit & find you should be playing with something different. How many people on this forum would learn to drive a car with the seat, steering wheel & mirrors set exactly as they were when it left the factory, only starting to adjust them when they had passed their driving test?

I will admit that my advice might be influenced by being 6' 6" tall and having started playing with standard clubs.

Im of average height but i completely agree with you

Why learn with a set of clubs you dont intend on using once you've 'learnt' how to play

I should heed my own advice but it's lessons however if you are not going to practice what you are taught in the lessons then you'd be as welll giving your money to the pro and walking away without spending time with him.

Lessons without practice will do more harm than no lessons at all.

Had lessons to rebuild the swing a lot. It is now more or less where it is going to be and so I got the C/F knowing it won't change much more. If you are going to have lessons and perhaps change path/plane it may have an impact on any measurements you have for a C/F fit. My advise would speak to your pro and see how big a change needs to be made and then decide if you want to have lessons first, get comfy with the new swing and then get the fit.

Don't forget winter will be here before you know it and so the ideal time to make swing changes. By the time you bed these in it will be 2014 and loads of new shiny gear on offer to tempt you

Possibly worth analysing why you have gone from 12 to 14 first!

Any, all, none, either no change or Snelly's method, have their benefits and detractions.

Right here Ma' man.

I got fitted for my MP63's in February this year and started lessons in April.

My previous swing (Stack and Tilt) 'feels' quite a bit different to the one my pro has me working on (Conventional swing). Still, I hit the clubs well with my previous swing, but hit them much better with my current swing.

I'd hazard a guess that you'll be fine
