Following on from BiMs post about better known covere, which covers are just better than the original? Going to be a tough one.
As a metalhead I will go with Metallicas version of Whisky in the Jar.

Could be a short thread though...:unsure:

No, the song is much older than that, I believe.
Irish folk song from millions of years ago but bought to public knowledge by TL
What Imurg says seems to be the gist of it. Song played for eons on the folk scene, reworked and put out in modern times by The Dubliner's, smashed out of the park by TL. I suspect most people think of TL as being the originators of it in the version they sing. As with many folk songs, it will have been subtly altered through the years.
