So standing on the 17th at Kent and Surrey, dormie 2 up, no need to do anything stupid. I've hit a good drive down the middle (just short of a ditch), leaving 230 odd to the green, over a pond. Smiffy in trouble down the left. No need to do anything heroic to seal the match, just a solid 5 needed. Wedge up to the pond, wedge over, 2 putt for 5, sorted.

Except,

My temporary caddie, JustOneUK, is going 'go for it, you can get up in two'. I'm going 'no, I don't need to', JOUK's giving it all the old chat about manning up, so I think flip it, give me the 5w.

One very ropey shot follows, nearly missed the flipping thing, which just clears the water with a low cut, and ends up about 20 yards short. An up and down, and a par on the card.

Course management.

It's boring.

Ditto. If I have a shot, 50 yards to a 5ft gap between two trees, I am more likely to make par, than if I try to chip out sideways. Chipping out, my brain shuts down, and I will fat it, shank it, top it, hit it into the trees the other side of the fairway, what ever. I like to go for the impossible, as if it comes off, wey hey. If it doesn't, often it will hit a tree, and work out ok any way. At least if I try a shot, I won't walk away thinking 'what if?'

I'm doubly bad then. Pulled out the SC5 at the weekend and its telling me 197 to the bunker. Not a problem I can only hit my 3H 185 max. Forgot to factor in a) the new swing and the better turn, smoother tempo and so increased yardage, b) the wind

DOH!

Disagree. The better you get the sooner you realise that you don't need heroics to recover. Put it back in play and hit a nice shot to the green, it's lack of confidence that makes you hit the silly recovery shot, no matter how difficult.

DAMN GOOD CADDY! He knew the carry was only 170yds and if you thinned the crap out of your 5wood you'd probably still make it :D
If you'd have laid up you'd only have fatted the next into the pond... like Smiffy did :D :D

You wait til I'm your caddy round Walton. With very little effort (none in fact) I could be the worst caddy yet.

That said, I was chatting to a guy today, who played in our Auction final a few years ago, with about 3 grand on the match. He needed a caddy, so JC stepped forwards. Now he doesn't know what day of the week it is most days. So, come the first hole, he caddies Gary onto the green in two, where upon G three putts. JC goes, so what was the point of that? I get you here, and you 3 stab! What's the point?
