You obviously don't play military golf - left, right, left, right, ....
Ditto. If I have a shot, 50 yards to a 5ft gap between two trees, I am more likely to make par, than if I try to chip out sideways. Chipping out, my brain shuts down, and I will fat it, shank it, top it, hit it into the trees the other side of the fairway, what ever. I like to go for the impossible, as if it comes off, wey hey. If it doesn't, often it will hit a tree, and work out ok any way. At least if I try a shot, I won't walk away thinking 'what if?'
So standing on the 17th at Kent and Surrey, dormie 2 up, no need to do anything stupid. I've hit a good drive down the middle (just short of a ditch), leaving 230 odd to the green, over a pond. Smiffy in trouble down the left. No need to do anything heroic to seal the match, just a solid 5 needed. Wedge up to the pond, wedge over, 2 putt for 5, sorted.
Except,
My temporary caddie, JustOneUK, is going 'go for it, you can get up in two'. I'm going 'no, I don't need to', JOUK's giving it all the old chat about manning up, so I think flip it, give me the 5w.
One very ropey shot follows, nearly missed the flipping thing, which just clears the water with a low cut, and ends up about 20 yards short. An up and down, and a par on the card.
