Conspiracy theory

As much nonsense as the OP I'm afraid. What is it with people and conspiracy theories?

THAT much money corrupts. There will be things in that contract or unspoken things in the Rory/Nike deal which are not in the best interests of sporting integrity, or the best interests of golf, or the best interests of Rory, who has taken the deal first and foremost for the money, with sporting excellence being a welcome but secondary consideration.

Of course it may well be a straightforward case of ' here's £60million and all you have to do is wear our clothes, play our balls and clubs, carry our bag and say nice things about us when asked and we won't bother you again until we come to renew the deal' What I am saying is that Rory is now part of Team Nike.He is an employee and if he wants to keep his job he has to perform, first and foremost, and he has to bow to the boss now and again.

HE is at the top of the game, or very close to it. And he changes the vital tools that got him there. Tools that golfers at every level become very intimate with. Go figure.

I wonder if 'Team Nike' golfers will have to play to 'team' orders like the F1 guys.

This putt for McIlroy to win the Masters...

Oh my! He's putted it into the bunker!

He needs to get up and down to win...

He's duffed it!!!

And again!!!

Now he's got it out and it's a tap in but he's handed the title to Woods! Unbelievable!

When Bubba Watson was asked if he thought Rory's club were at least in part to blame for his form he said...

"Nope. Think about it, we change equipment every year. We have a new driver come out from Ping, a new 3-wood, new irons, a new ball. It might be the same company but it's all new. You've got new golf shoes so they feel different on your feet. You've got all these things coming out, so I don't see Rory's switch as that big of a change"

Tiger went from Titleist to Nike, didn't do him any harm.

But I thought every pro playing Nike clubs/balls, was really just playing someone else's forged unobtainium irons with a Nike stamp !

At least that's what was said a few weeks ago, wasn't it?

... Forgot about the "unspoken" things, of course the best conspiracy theories are always ones with unspoken things in them, things that can not be confirmed, or disproven ... At least that's what my unnamed source, close to the deal has told me ;)

Don't buy the idea that Rory and Tiger are treated the same by NIke that's complete BS,Tiger is more of a pull than Rory and when Tiger lost he's game a few years back the TV viewing figures were down and so where the gate takings at PGA tour events.Who would be daft enough to consider they don't give a dam who's worlds no1 at Nike.

He has a remarkable matchplay record... other than in the Ryder Cup!

3 US Junior Amateurs on the spin and then 3 US Amateurs the next three years...

Not so remarkable in the Accenture Matchplay over the last 5 years.

I think you are struggling to understand the relationship between an equipment manufacturer and pro'.

It most certainly is not one of employer and employee. Yes the player must agree to use an agreed amount of the equipment, must agree to undertake certain promotional duties and must not behave in a manner that presents the sponsor in a bad light.

But he most certainly is not answerable in the way that a footballer is to his club or an F1 driver is to his team. Both of these are employee/employer relationships; a tour pro' is not employed by his equipment supplier merely sponsored by them.

Obviously if a player fails to achieve at the necessary level his ranking will suffer and, thus, his negotiating position with sponsors such as Nike.

I think £60 million suggests a far tighter arangement than the norm and far more influence being exerted by Nike than is the norm, but I bow to your eloquent and perfectly believable summary of the normal relationship between a pro and the sponsors.

I'm interested to see how you think it is in anyone's interest that Rory's Nike contract does anything to impact on his ability on the golf course. It's not in Rory's interest, it's not in his management companies interest and most of all, it's not in Nike's interest. They signed him as he should be Tiger's successor, the fact he is not playing well at the moment is simply a case of him not playing well at the moment, nothing more, nothing less. To suggest Nike are doing something sinister that affects his game is daft in my opinion.

its makes me laugh how everyone is kissing tiger woods ass now his back on top. only this time last year the majority of folk where throwing him to the crows!
