I'm not saying that I think this is fact but could it at all be possible that Nike took Rory on knowing that he would be second at Nike to Tiger with all the advertising campaigns, hospitality etc(remember the ad "you'll learn") and this would put him in a "second best" place that would go on to affect young Rorys game.Remember Tigers very good at intimidating people and we know Rory can be a tad vunerable .Before Rory signed with Nike and with Tigers form improving Rory would be the only player so good that could stop Tiger getting to the top again....Just an idea BS or possible :).

or... top2 in the world, loads of media coverage and jostling for the big comps/world no1

makes total business sense to me.
Agree pretty sure Nike are thinking 1 and 2 but surely its better for them if Tigers no1.Not saying theres any F1 style team orders but Rory must be second best to Tiger at Nike and could this be getting to the guy?

With Tiger Hitting form and IF Rory would have stayed with Titleist(Faldo was right)we could have been in for some incredible golf that possibly wont happen now.....

Absolute fantasy I'm afraid. It was about having 1 & 2 in the world, that's it

I dont get it. Surely the positioning of Tiger and Rory will be decided by how many shots they take to hole the ball. If Rory was still with Titleist his world position would be the same, well unless he cant play as well withe Nike gear.

Don't understand this idea that it is somehow Team Nike.

Equipment manufacturers are simply that. They do not determine a player's tournament schedule, a player's swing, or a player's performance. They merely provide copious amounts of kit and bags of money.

In return they get exposure for their products. It really makes no difference to Nike who is No:1 as Tiger continued to be a marketing draw even when he was No:58.

If anything it would be better for them if Rory were No:1 as he is not yet a strong enough "brand" to remain a marketing influence if he drops too far down the rankings.

Nike are VERY powerful when it comes to their 'staff'. Remember the 1998 World Cup final when Ronaldo had a fit in his hotel room in the early hours of the morning. Ronaldo was rubbish in the final and many questioned why he had played at all. It was stated at the time that Nike had instructed him to play. Their sponsorship money, etc was cited as the reason that he had to play.

I'm very surprised that Rory moved to Nike. It's obviously all about the money but, reputationally, I'd have either stayed at Titleist or gone to another golf manufacturer.

My theory.

Nike thought Tiger was finished and signed Rory up as the natural successor. Tiger clearly isn't finished which is just as well for Nike because Rory clearly doesn't YET have what it takes to be a stand out world number 1.

Pure conspiracy theory nonsense which has been refuted on a number of occasions by Brazilian FA, the medical men & Ronaldo himself.

As much nonsense as the OP I'm afraid. What is it with people and conspiracy theories?

Oh my, another one. Maybe that's also why Rory played the other week with toothache

Total fiction. No team orders and in my mind it was only a matter of time before they became #1 and #2 in the world. Sadly I can't see it lasting and while Woods will be #1 for good while yet, I can see McIlroy slipping down the pecking order. It is nothing to do with the gear but he's swing is a mess (as if I can criticise) compared to last year and his head just doesn't seem right. We all know that off course distractions and not just Woods' alliances, have affected many golfers through the years.
