Oh mighty forum, I turn to you in my hour of need....

I've put in a fair amount of practice during the last few weeks and whilst I'm feeling more confident and am seeing improvement in most areas, especially my putting thanks to Bob's marvellous invention, I'm really struggling to string 2 good rounds together.

Played in a comp at the end of June and shot a nett 66 and thought I'd turned the corner. Since then I've struggled massively with consistency. In Saturday's medal I shot a nett 76, Monday after work nett 69 and tonight in a roll up, nett 76 again. Playing again tomorrow so should be a good 'un! :)

In light of this...what makes a consistent golfer?! Experience? Mindset? Practice? Routine? I feel like my game is on the brink but just cannot seem to get any sort of consistency going and it's starting to do head in :(

Any advice / pearls of wisdom would be appreciated! :D

Im in the same boat as you. Just keep plugging away and it will come. I don't know how people shoot similar rounds week in and week out?.

To answer your question, I would say remembering what you did last time out you played well and not try to change things mid round when things are going bad.

If one thing sums up my play at the minute is that I consistantly inconsistant, so in a way at least I'm being inconsistantly consistant :D

I think it also comes down to focus and your own mind set, if you're going out after a good round thinking the up coming round will be a stinker, you've already convinced yourself of the outcome even before you've hit a ball.

So remember what you did well in the good round and bring that game to the tee, push all thoughts of the bad rounds to the dark hole in the back of your mind and only think about the good round.

Good positive thought.

Cheers
Dave

Generally speaking, your consistency level relates to your current handicap - low handicap = consistent, high handicap = inconsistent. This principle is used in the Annual Review of Handicaps. At each handicap level there is an expected level (target level) which becomes tighter the lower the handicap.

So stop worrying, enjoy your golf and look forward to more consistency when you get down to the low teens.

Not worrying about how consistent you are for a start. You'll get paranoid and start imagining some voodoo golf spell is on you. Just get out there and relax and not worry about your score until the end when you're totting it up.

I feel exactly the same as you, although probably even more inconsistent as I play off an (unofficialy) higher handicap!
I tend to find that I can play a round one week where my short game is pretty decent (for me) but my driving/long irons are terrible, then play the week after and drive the ball well and hit my long irons ok (for me), but my putting and chipping is awful! I can never seem to play a round where everything comes together, hence why my scores are ranging from 95-105ish.
My brother, who plays off 9, is just nice and steady every time we go out and he never ever practices! He makes me physically sick!!

Welcome to the life of the high handicap golfer :D :D we just have to grin and bare it. (me 24.4)
However I have just managed to play 5 of my last 6 rounds to within 4 shots of my handicap, which I look upon about as good as I have played consistantly. But in April and May I was awful, only just about getting 21 points in stableford comps.
My problem is that at my course there is danger everywhere and I am not good enough to keep missing it, instead of hitting the problems on the left (water/OOB) I over compensate and hit the hazards on the other side.
I feel I'm slowly getting there, on Tuesday night I only had one penalty shot against me (the av is 3.3 per round) which is the best I have ever done around my course, however my iron play wasn't at its best and my 32 points (99 shots) was my worse of those 6 rounds.

So I think its practice, practice and practice some more.

Well, as predicted, tonight's round was a better one...but it summed up my game to perfection!!

Hit a great drive on the par 4 first leaving a short approach...suffice to say I bu99ered it up and walked off with a 7. Despite that, I got to the turn 7 over gross!

The back 9 was a mixture of average and mostly crap golf...16 over gross, leaving me with a 93 (par 70), so not too shabby, but what might've been...

Still, it was good fun! :D

My consistency is horrific and it's starting to get me down tbh.

I thought I'd finally crossed over into decent golf with back to back scores of 77 and 81, but suddenly shot 2 rounds in the 90s!?

Personally my biggest problem on the day is swing plane. If I find the right swing plane early enough in a round, I'll do well, otherwise I'll be poor. Just wish I had a way of finding that plane faster....
