Without sounding ungrateful and disrespectful, why does alcohol seem to be acceptable as the norm for prizes in golf comps.
it has been a bug bare for me for ages now.
i am not a big spirits drinker and i won 3 bottles of whiskey at our pro-am yesterday for nearest to one of the pins.
surely it being a golfcomp prizes should be golf related?
maybe i am wrong, its just my opinion, does anyone agree?

Good point mate , i've won quite a few bottles of drink over the years and always end up giving them away as I dont touch spirits or wine/champagne etc

I think the assumption is that any golf gift will be just as wrong. Wrong brand, wrong model, wrong size, wrong colour.

In my society we get M&S vouchers. Not sure if that's better or worse. It will buy a pair of trolleys though.

I don't agree unless they do it all the time.....It's difficult to come up with original prizes that will be OK for everyone who may win. Our club do crystal decanters and the like for some of the major comps, usually vouchers for pro etc for the rest. Winter we do bottle prizes in the run up to Christmas and Bar/Catering vouchers at other times. All in all we try to vary things but can't please all of the people etc....

Captain of our society once pushed the boat out and got a really nice wedge for the winner of his comp. You can guess who won if I say there was one left hander in the field of 30. :D

you think winning bottles of plonk is wrong!!!

I won a very expensive cuban cigar for longest drive once... i mean, come on, a cigar????? whoever thought that was a good idea needs his head checking.

gave it to my dad!

I always think the best thing is something from the pro shop with the understanding that it can be exchanged, so its like winnng vouchers but not

Difficult if it isn't your course, and the prizes are given out after the pro has gone home.

We've had players with over £500 credit in our's who moan, yes MOAN !!! that they can't find anything to spend it on !!!!

Whats your point ? If you already have all your clubs sorted , plenty of balls and shoes. Dont need any more clothes either then what the heck ARE you supposed to buy with it ? :D

Errrr, it was a reply to the quoted post. Basically trying to say (following on from my earlier post) that you can't please all the people all of the time. I agree with you entirely that voucher prizes all the time will create problems - even very nice problems like having £500 credit.

Totally agree... they should put up 200 Benson&Hedges as a prize instead

I always need things even if its just a polo shirt and a dozen pro V1x's.

There is no right answer when I was a junior 14 15 year old, our club went through a stage of giving out crystal I had tonnes of the stuff, what good was it to me. I just think if you give a golfer access to golf stuff its as close as you can get to win win.

I agree that booze seems slightly presumptious.

For us, it is always vouchers for use within the resort.

This covers hotels, restaurants, pro shop, bars, spa, Twenty Ten course, lessons etc.

I think this makes sense as it keeps money within the resort (and hopefully keeps the subs down slightly).

I'm hoping that they will let me use the £100 I've won so far against next years subs (otherwise I can't afford another year here).

Like you say it's a tough one and everyone cant be pleased all the time. Just keep saving the vouchers up and eventually you'll need more than just a few balls/tees from the pro shop and you never know you might be able to get a set of woods or irons for next to nowt every 5 years or so

As a non-drinker these days it's useless for me. Fortunately the walk to the prize table is a rare occurrence and so I normally just ask for it to be raffled or give it back. I'd rather get pro-shop vouchers, balls or even some food vouchers to spend in the clubhouse.

A few PM's have been flying around, but I'm pleased to say that I have finally sorted the prizes out for Cooden on Friday.

1st prize..a lesson with Bobmac
2nd prize..two lessons with Bobmac
3rd prize..a block booking of lessons with Bobmac

Nearest the pin & longest drive....a restraining order on Bobmac
