Rather than take the Captain’s courtesy thread off topic... (that ones supposed to be about courses)

While I'm sure most of us will have assisted our club in some form (& many actually on committees) I've never done it officially on a committee so any 'thank you' has been in the form of a drink etc at most

So what are the ‘perks’ to serving on a golf club committee?
(Using perks instead of remuneration/recompense because I’m sure folks don’t take office primarily for what they might get in return)

Clearly each committee member will be giving a lot to the running of the club for a period of office so I’ve no issue with them getting something in return (although I’ve no objection if the thread drifts into that area to discuss appropriateness or scale) and guessing not all committee members will get the same level of perks anyway

At a guess and from some posts I’ve read, the perks might include
• Free Subs
• Nominated parking space
• Reciprocal free ‘away’ golf
• Invites (not sure to what though)
• Priority on the 1st tee (contentious issue for some)

Do the free subs just last for the period of captaincy or beyond? What about food & drink etc in the clubhouse

Anyway what do they get and is it appropriate? (deliberately didn’t use ‘deserved’ because I’m sure whatever level it is it would fall short of the unpaid work)

Edit to add: as a final thought, is it ever abused/flaunted or the reverse, spread through ordinary members? i.e captain gives up his parking space for a month to a member who has done xyz

When I was on the Committee there were no perks.....rather more hassle from members moaning about this, that and the other while I was trying to play..

Yep exactly this - constant questions about someone's HC , same people always asking about getting shots and generally complaining

Some days it would be nice just to have a round without any questions

The only people with perks are

Parking spot - Capt , Vice , President , Lady Capt and Treasurer

Yes I got the 5 listed above. However, the Chair of the Finance Committee asked me to run a spreadsheet of expenses to give them a better idea of what it costs during the year of Captaincy, with the intention of also covering other expenses if they were considered high. Unfortunately it was for future Captains.

It cost me close on £1,000 over and above any benefits, and definitely wasn't anywhere near cost neutral.

As to the members coming up every time you are there with questions and moans. They are entitled to do that. All I asked is that they waited till after my round or put it in writing. You'd be amazed how many didn't bother.

This, been serving match sec 4 yrs now, most guys are fine, but the moaners don't care where you are at the time or what you are doing. I've even been approached as i had a meal with the family outside the golf club.

So from the early replies its seems its not until you take Captaincy or above that some kind of perks kick in (and as suspected Hobbit confirms even then its not a break even deal)

While the various worker bee committee members get squat to recognise their efforts

I have had phone calls at 7 in the morning , 11 at night , someone complaining to my wife about a KO comp , people coming up to me as in putting or having some food even shopping in Tescos

Another vote for nothing. I had 2 years on a committee and quite enjoyed it. The club was going through a financially traumatic time and being on the committee at least I understood the problems and the reasons for certain decisions. I had people complaining to me about decisions made but when I explained the reasoning the wind was gone from their sails. I think if committee's were more open with members about decisions made there would be less griping.

I agree with the comments about expense to Captain's. I don't particularly see why committee members would incur many costs, other than time, but Captain's really get hammered. I don't think it is unreasonable for Captain's, a one year only affair at pretty much all clubs, to get some form of relief from subs whether full or partial. Having seen close up the demands on a captain I would never want to be one.

I got a year with no subs to pay as Ladies Captain, nothing else as a Committee member.

No parking space - neither would I have wanted one. It was nice to go up and play a round of golf without people seeing my car in car park, and thinking "I'll just go and ask mimms...."

I remember a friend who was captain and he said exactly this and he said it put him off his golf during that year and was so busy running around to events and matchs etc

I thought that as captain at some courses subs were free, which personally I think is the way it should be, a bit of give and take at the course you helping out. As well as the normal parking space.

Our captain gets reduced fees, doesnt have to pay entry fees to comps or for club matches and gets some small support throughout the year (ie a blazer, drinks bill on captains day etc). Our golf secretary gets his fees paid for. The various captains and vice captains get parking spots, the rest of us get diddly squat

All of the above plus ,Council and committee members can put their names on the start sheet, before it's open to other members and Captain has a free bar tab .

Parking spot, a rather tacky green blazer and free subs for the year of Captaincy. Some of the Council get parking spots and that's it.

No bar tab, no ex's.

As a committee member the hassle far outweights any benefits, and is possibly right to avoid any freeloaders.

The only one we had was being able to have a booked tee time for Sunday comps, that I can remember.

The biggest problem is people coming and asking you things during your own round, asking questions on behalf of their mates, asking favours for mates, asking why this fella got that, and this other fella only go the other, or other things that don't concern them. again, as soon as you ask then to e-mail it in, its the last you hear of it, as they can't be bothered.

Right that's StuC covered, some others were even worse..... :D

LOL, You do question yourself at times as to why do i do this. Really enjoyed it for the first couple of years, but becoming a 'task' lately. If only there was someone waiting in the wings?

I suppose the main perks at ours for being on Committee would be the matches we have... which are deemed Committee Matches.

R&A at the Old Course with Black tie Dinner in the R&A club house
Muirfield
Troon
Royal Burgess
Western Gailes
Carnoustie
Skibo

ok i knew i was at the wrong club but now im sure im treasurer for the wrong club!!!! wow thats some rewards :)

On Greens and no perks.

Captain gets free subs, reduced bar prices and parking slot. Board directors also get parking slots as does Mens president and past Captain.

One third off subs and a lot of hassle! And a chance (if quick enough) of a car park a few yards closer than normal!

Captains got free subs for their year, and 2/3rds off the year after, but it normally cost more than that in obligations and expectations!!

Never consider the perks when considering the role!

Got my subs covered for my year plus the parking space but probably paid that X 3 or 4 times over to be honest.

Endless drinks at the bar plus my weekend over two days providing gifts for all competitors plus food at half way hut

Not complaining because I really had a blast and if was asked again then I would say yes. It's something to look back on with immense fondness.

Had two courtesies in my year - one mid-year purely by chance and the other as the only true courtesy of my tenure.

It's quite a commitment during the year and in honesty courtesies in the year after office would've been a 'real' perk.
