Come on children time to be honest

Similar distances as op

Driver: 180-220
5i: 150
Pw: 100-110

All if these clubs could go anywhere though! Working on consistancy and distance this year, don't want mega distance just a little more out of my irons.

Had a lesson yesterday hitting 6 irons to a flag 170 yards away. The good ones were between 10 and 15 yards short without really any run out but absolutely pured one that finished by the flag.

Had a go with the Mizuno swing DNA device earlier on which gave me a consistent 77 mph with a 6 iron and most of the other numbers in the middle (4's and 5s). Then tried some different shaft and head combinations and interesting how these produced different ball flights and distances.

The assistant pro had a swish, no warm up, 90mph with a high penetrating ball flight.

As for driver, I usually hit on quite a low trajectory so tend to get a fair bit of run when the fairways are hard. We have a 275 yard par 4 which I can get to within about 25 yards of on a flat day if I middle one, and have occasionally reached when it's running. Don't usually take driver there though.

Pitching wedge used to be my 100 yard shot, but reviewing this as loft on current club is a bit stronger.

I can only think my PW is broken!

Driver - 230-240 average, can get it out to 270 if I bend my back (finding it afterwards is difficult though!)
5i - 175
PW - about 100!

I think I must hit my shorter irons half-heartedly - I get my 8i out to about 140-145, but 9i only goes 120 and wedge 100! I need an 8 and a half iron for the 130 yard shot.

Distances are in summer with no wind - I always play a club more at this time of year.

Remember PW lofts these days vary from 43 - 48 degrees, which can give quite a spread of distances.

Interesting how similar the distances are for the majority of posters in this thread.

Its cos I said be honest

;)

Just amazed no one said 320 and very proud of my little thread....only out on a par three today I could only hit my PW about 80 yrds

Had a scan and I think that I'm longest in the thread so far (or the biggest liar... you decide ;)

at least until Timgolfy comes along that is :)

PW 135 carry
5iron 185 carry
Driver avg 285-290 total (dont know carry tbh, would never take on any carry over danger longer than 260 though...)

And then it just gets silly....

When I was first playing I found this chart of average weak to strong hitter distances which gave me a guide to how far I should be hitting (with my averages added on the end:

Club Weak Mid Strong Mine
Driver---200 -230- 260 - 220
3-wood- 180 -215- 235 - 200
3-iron--- 160 -180- 200 - ??? (Don't use)
4-iron--- 150 -170- 185 - 170 (Hybrid)
5-iron--- 140 -160- 170 - 160
6-iron--- 130 -150- 160 - 150
7-iron--- 120 -140- 150 - 140
8-iron--- 110 -130- 140 - 130
9-iron--- 95 --115- 130 - 115
PW------ 80 --105- 120 - 105
SW------ 60 --80-- 100 - 80

Have got to a stage now where I'm pretty much middle of the road on all of these so now just got to sort out the accurancy and consistancy and thats the game cracked!! :D

I choose to hit my 5 iron about 175 and my PW about 125.

I could probably belt them about 190 and 140 if I wanted to but that would affect accuracy in a big way..

I can understand that people want to benchmark how far they hit the ball with a given club but obviously, what you want to do with the trajectory and level of control are major factors in what club to hit. If the target is 150 yards away, it does not mean I am going to hit an 8 iron necessarily.

As for my driver, no idea what my average is but I don't get out-driven very often. The longest drivers of the ball that I have seen on the forum are JustOne and Pieman. I am about the same as them. When we hit a good one, we'd outdrive the other two. I'd say all of us can hit the fairway at 300-350 yards on our day. In fact I have seen Justone out-drive me by 2 yards and mine was 352 yards long! However, that does not mean we have a high average! If I was to guess, I would say my average on the fairway is 240-250 yards. Many people significantly over-estimate their average driver distance in my experience.

And EZ Prophet. If your average is 290 then you are either freakishly long or mistaken. For example, if you are averaging 290 off the tee then in 2011, you would be just outside the top 50 on the PGA Tour for driving distance. You outhit all of the following players: Tiger, Goosen, Els, Furyk, Villegas, Schwartzel, McDowell and Singh.

So far this season (with warm, still air and dry fairways)
Driver - 275ish
5 iron - 195ish
PW - 135ish

In normal conditions (ie windier, damper etc):

Driver - 250ish
5 iron - 185ish
PW - 130ish

I'm not going to defend my statement too much because no matter what Ill probably come off like a bit of a douche, but I can assure you I'm not mistaken. I've played golf since I was 8 years old and know how far I hit the ball.

Im not freakishly long but FWIW I've only played golf with 3 people who are longer than me (one of them went to RE/MAX)

I enjoy this forum because I like to think of myself as a bit of a know it all (which my family will certainly attest to!) and I like giving my honest, opinions and advice to others. Like I said in my post you dont have to believe me (this is the internet for gods sake!) and thats fine by me.

I will be trying to get involved with the forum meets etc in the future so if you are correct Im the one whos going to look like an idiot!

In fact, me and you definitely need to have a friendly (...ish ;) ) long drive comp AND a "how well do you know your distances" comp if we ever meet at a forum get together, to show once and for all who knows more about the other persons game!!

Sounds good! :)

Average carry accrding to GPS
Driver 220-230
5i 165-170
PW 105-110

be interested in what radar/trackman came up with.

Add about 50-75 yards for your driver,

Trackman told me i was carrying 275 (longest 290) with 40+ yards roll out, like fook. I was pinging them tuesday night with my longest carry being around 240. I know this was accurate as i was using my splash marks in the bankers as my pitching point. using GPS from the tee where i was hitting to that point.

I reckon the trackman is nothing more than a ego inflator. either that or they base the ball flight on perfectly still, perfect temps and maybe a slight tail wind. either way i would never use an instore trackman to guage distance again unless it was back to back.

easy ladies :D :D didnt post mine , dont know my exact yardages but know what i would play to certain par 3 etc..200 - 210yrd par 3 id take out 3 iron.. often make it often be short/left / right etc if i was playing a straight par 4 in or around 300yrds i would wait til green was clear coz IF & i say If i hit it out of the sweet spot i will get it there, how far it carried how far it ran ive no idea.. 120 out id be hitting p/w .. the mate i play with & won a 2ball scramble with yesterday is 1 club stronger/longer than me

On this kind of thread, us poor Mizuno player get creamed - because our lofts are so much weaker than other brands.

Maybe start a seperate thread for Mizzy players!!

I am encouraged by reading this thread. The majority of the distances seem to be similar to mine, even a load of the lower handicappers. That suggests to me that if I can keep it in play and improve putting and chipping, then I can get down to a respectable handicap! :D
