The time commitment puts me off.

Happy to give up the time to play the match, but can't really hang around at the club afterwards for more than 30 minutes. That's the problem with having a young family.

I think most of the people that tend to play matches at my place tend to be a bit older.

Not much help but I am the opposite end, never played in any team, don't know what teams there are and don't really have the time for it.

Probably like a large chunk of the membership at all clubs?

No "leagues" here in Suffolk but we do have inter-club matchplay comps...

Stenson Shield - off scratch, 18 holes foursome match play a.m. followed by 18 holes singles matchplay pm.

Hambro - max handicap 9, teams of 8, 36 holes foursomes

Tolly - 10-18 h'cap, teams fo 8, 36 holes foursomes

Beaumont - 18 holes 4BBB, handicaps between 10 and 20, minimum 55 years old, 2 players must be 65 or over

Parks - same as Beaumont but max handicap is 9.

We don't have a Stenson side as we just don't have enough low handicap golfers to make our participation feasible.

Hambro we wheel out pretty much the same core group of golfers year after year as we only have a dozen or so single figure golfers....but as a result we are hugely experienced and are rarely a pushover...even away from home

Tolly....huge support for the Tolly, vast number of players to choose from, a fight to get in them team.....we actually won the comp a couple of years ago

Beaumont....again well supported, team usually made up of our Seniors who regularly play friendly matches home and away against other clubs so are well versed in the art of Matchplay....won the comp in its inaugural year 2010

Parks....sadly due to handicap changes in the CoC's we've had to pull out.

I've played (or Captained) pretty much every year in the Hambro for the last ten years.....its good fun even if the 36 holes foursomes format is a tad "wearing".

Our club has a team that seems to play against other local clubs (and a seniors team as well I think). I'm sure it'll be a long, long time before I'm ever invited to play though!

Most of my golf is club matches. Looking on the system I have 2 or 3 a week for the foreseeable future; and had 3 on consecutive days last week.

If you normally have a coffee/bacon roll before playing and head into the clubhouse for a pint and a meal after playjng, then you are clearly more likely to find most match formats to your liking.

If you just want a game with your mates, chat on the way round and head off quickly afterwards it's unlikely to be high on your list of attractive options!

I haven't seen much change over the 40 years I've been playing matches, or most other golf formats. Probably the most obvious one is the shift from individual open comps to pairs and team events - but the reasons for that have been discussed before.

We enter a team in the Surrey Scratch KO which you think would be the best five players in the club. Not when the club captain wants his 16-year old son in the team.

I play on the ladies teams and the mixed team. The mixed is a knockout and we usually have no problems getting the players, the same applies to the ladies knockouts but both those are mostly played at the weekend.

We also have a ladies team that plays in the county shield leagues. There are scratch, silver and bronze leagues, I have tried to get a scratch team together, mainly for the chance of getting drawn to against the top clubs on the Lancashire coast but the matches are played at the weekend and we have all out major comps on Saturdays or Sundays and people don't want to commit too much.

The silver team used to be 7 to a team but this year it has dropped to 5 because a lot of club struggled to fill teams, we always managed to get 7 but by coincidence we have a match next Friday and I only have 3 players so far, so I will need to do a lot of badgering to get another 2 players.

I love playing for the teams, you get to play other courses for no cost, but sadly a lot don't think that way.

In Winter our local league has six teams in it and there are six players in a team. No cat 1 players are allowed and the team must include at least three cat three players or above - this is to encourage the higher handicappers to get involved in team comps.

In Summer the scratch league has a number of divisions and I think the team now consists of five players.

The other county league in the Summer consists of two divisions of four teams each with sixteen players in the team playing eight BB matches. This gives more players the chance of representing the club but the downside is that for the last couple of seasons you only play your opponents once and not on a home and away basis. This means that you may only have one away game to look forward to all summer.

Not much other interest I would imagine. Women get way too much golf that gets in the way of proper golf!

We have an elite team (low handicappers), a club team (male) and put out mixed teams both of which are for friendly fixtures. I know the seniors play both friendlies but also have a league team as well

We are very well catered for in essex:
Thornton cup scratch-5hcp played off scratch with foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon.

Leslie wood-same as above but teams off 10 7.5hcp and over.

Norman plum-12.5hcp and over bb match play 3 teams home and away. Straight forward knockout

Jubilee cup-matchplay 6 singles of 11.5hcp and over played off scratch and 3 pairs bb between 17-24 handicapped. League format top 2 go through to knockouts. Order of merit as well for singles and pairs.

Curry cup-too difficult to explain but foursomes morning and singles in the afternoon.

As has been said in Dorset we have a handicap league for golfers up to 10 and one from 11-18. Both sides also play in cup comps.

The seniors play loads of friendly matches home and away and the ladies section also have external comps.

There is definately a trend developing in the leagues to move away from the social aspects. Rarely do sides stay to share a meal afterwards as many are played at weekends and people want to get away. This makes it difficult for the clubs in respect of revenue as they are effectively giving away free tee times and receiving nothing in return.

As the number of golf clubs and members decline I think this will only get worse and we are already seeing clubs pulling out of some of the leagues. For a club to give up an hour tee time slot plus a buffer in prime time for their members will be increasingly unpopular with those not playing. The trend for nomadic players will also mean fielding teams becomes more difficult.

Having said that the seniors friendly matches are going gangbusters - obviously the prospect of friendly 4BBB followed by a formal meal appeals and we field 2 or 3 teams a week in the summer.

We have a Tigers, rabbits, Scatch, nett and seniors teams.

Played a few captains friendly matches, which are always fun. Also played a few of the Tigers matches, always more serious.
Its a good way to test yourself under pressure. It really shows where your weaknesses are, so is a great way to see where improvement is needed.

Not sure where to start with this one Tom.
Golf is for everyone, golf needs to attract more people of all ages and sexes into the game, sexist comments like yours have no place in the game or on this forum.

Have a word with yourself before we do it for you 😡

We play the South East Association - 16 local clubs, and there's about 7 different trophies all played off scratch but for different handicap groups - any, 5+, 8+, 12+, 15+, 18+ and I think theres a 21+ - eight individual matches, if it finishes 4-4 away goals count.

Managed to get to the final of the 8+ but couldn't play as it was arranged for while I was away on holiday

Our scratch team is always well represented, I think out of the regulars the highest handicap is 3 or 4. I have stepped in when they have been short before and did alright.

The B team is a knew thing that only started last year, handicaps all range from low single figures to high teens as the limit is 18z

I think part of the problem is that ours usually tee off at 1400-1600. most people are at work then, it's not a game for the working class in that aspect.

Always used to play at my previous club, where the standard was much lower.

At current club I feel to intimidated to play the men's matches. Played in a couple of mixed matches last year, which didn't make me feel under pressure.

I have just been picked for the Pallerette team that plays against other club low handicappers in a Foursome format.

Went to Tiverton GC yesterday for a round prior to next week but had to walk off after 10 holes due to the weather.
Really looking forward to the test.
