Not sure how they work. What if you want to play on a Saturday but dont want to enter the comp?

All depends on the plicy of each club

we allow social golf during the tee times that arent booked online

Some clubs book out the tee for the duration of the comp, say, the first 25 slots. After that it's like a normal day.
Some clubs will operate a "roll-up" system where you enter the comp, choose your time and go.
It can vary quite a bit so best to talk to the club to get the right info.

No social golf at ours during competition times. I'm having to wait until 16.04 today until I can go out after the mens competition. Times are also all drawn for the men.

We have start sheets, not competition sheets, as did my last club. Your group can be a mix of comp and none comp players or all of either. A full none comp group has equal standing on the course, and is only 'governed' by etiquette, i.e. if you're slow, let the group behind thro.' Its unambiguous, everyone knows and accepts the policy, and I've not heard any whinges.

THIS ^^^^ is exactly the same manner in which our club operates too.
My previous local club also.

At RAGC there used to be 2 hours of booked comp times after which is was back to roll-up and you could choose to enter the comp or not.

At Blackmoor, for normal monthly comps the booked times go from 8 to 12ish but there is an hour gap between 10 and 11 for social golf only, you can also plat Saturday or Sunday. For Board comps the competition is held on one day only and the course is booked for the comp from 745 to around 3ish. You can play social golf before anpd after.

You can only go out half hour after the last comp tee time on Saturday at old links on Wednesday you can go out at any time.

I don't think you can play too many, the more you play the more chance you have to reflect your true ability

I agree, I'd play comps every week if I could, in fact, it seems like that is what I am doing at the moment. Really don't see how you can play too many

Guess it will depend on how stressful people get when playing a comp

Always find you need to find a happy balance between social and comp golf to ensure you still remember to enjoy yourself without the pressures of a card in your pocket.

Comps aren't stressful - GM forum meets on the other hand...

The only exception I observe is 5 handicappers not expecting to gain a further cut but not wanting to loose cat 1 status...

I don't see the point in playing unless you've got a card in hand. Don't enjoy bounce rounds, seems a waste of good shots.

As for the whole category status, couldn't care less. As long as I'm enjoying my golf, score doesn't matter.
