Cleveland/Srixon fitting opportunity

Great write up. Did anyone try the AD333 tour ball. This could be a summer option for me so would be interested in any feedback on them

Evening all

Just got back from the fitting and need to get my thoughts down before my sieve like qualities kick in.

First off I'd like to say a massive thanks to GM, Studley Wood Golf Club and to the Cleveland/Srixon fitter....a very insightful and interesting day.

I arrived about 30 minutes before the fitting was due to start and met Paul from GM and the other "chosen one" Rob chewing the fat in the bar. Kev the photographer then arrived and we had a nice relaxing drink and was given a breakdown on how the day would work.

We wandered over to the fitting centre/range and into a double bayed area that the Cleveland/Srixon guys had kitted out with all sorts of goodies and as I walked through the door first I was nominated to go through the process first.

Dean (the Cleveland/Srixon fitter) took my wedges away and had a look over them whilst I warmed up and then hit some shots for him whilst we talked through what kind of golfer I am....what were my good and bad points, what I was looking for etc. He then gave me a cavity backed wedge to hit and explained how a club like this would be good for a golfer of my level.... after hitting some more shots he studied my stats and told my I have the classic out to in swing of your typical golfer and that I really didn't spin the ball much at all. So he stuck a gold spinner shaft onto the CB head and let me swing away.

Almost immediately my shots straightened up and I could visibly see the ball stopping quicker on the range with the added spin. Dean explained that with my current setup (Nike VR Pro bladed PW (47), 52 GW, 56 SW and 60 LW) I really had too many wedges for me and that he'd recommend going with just a 52 and 58...... the 58 gave the exact same distances but with better dispersion than my 56.

I was then fitted with Srixon balls.... for my level Dean fitted me for the standard AD333... a distance ball with a soft feel. Now, I'd never really believed that kind of statement. How can a ball be for distance but also be soft? Well it was true to its word. The ball felt solid on the club face, but you could also "feel" it gripping. A really weird sensation for me and it felt like it was right for me.

And that was it...my fitting done, time to move aside and let Rob at it.

I went onto the range with the 58 and hit another 50 (ish) balls....ranging from full swings to chips and some real accuracy work with some flags. To say I was impressed was an understatement.... I cannot wait to get the clubs and start playing with them!

Once Rob was done we did some interviews and photographs...impact shots, product placement kind of things....was nice seeing Kev do his thing and we seemed to be quite easy subjects for them to deal with!

We then headed over for some lunch and were told we could even head out for 9 holes of the course....bonus!

The course is wide and open, although a lot of water (which I found to my detriment)...... my driving was awful but hit some nice iron shots. Just a shame the greens had been hollow tinned the day before.....but it needs to be done.

Rob was a pleasure to spend time with....a good golfer, very friendly and knowledgable.

Overall the day was a blast...everyone was very friendly but also very professional. I will forever envy those who get chosen for these GM fittings, you're in for a real treat!

Hi all

I couldnt get online last night to tell about the experience so sorry for the delay!

I would also like to start by saying a huge thanks to GM and Cleveland for this opportunity it was great!

I left with plenty of time to get there and sailed through so got there at pretty much the same time as the GM boys and Dean so got to have a bit of a chin wag over a brew then Adam turned up so was nice to finally meet another forum member!

Before we knew it, it was time to head down to the range and get down to business. Adam was the first to get fitted which gave me chance to hit a basket of balls to get loose. Studley woods driving range is a very nice set up having a fair size chipping green with a bunker, about 10 bays with mats then in the warmer they have a lovely grassed area which you can practice on in front of the bays.

I worked my way through my balls then walked back in to the fitting room which I have to say looked great with some really nice looking Cleveland kit all around a big screen TV linked up to a track man to show all the technical data.
When it was my turn Dean then got me hitting shots with my pitching wedge followed by my gap wedge, once I had hit a few shots we gathered around the TV and went through the difference in distance I was getting with both clubs. I was only seeing a 5 yards difference between the 2 clubs, so we then looked at my lofts and talked about what shots I hit with what clubs, I carry a 51 a 56 and a 60 degree wedge, but I only rarely use my 60 deg wedge. Dean suggested trying a 58 deg wedge, handing me a 588 RTX after hitting a few shots looking at my figures he gave me another 58 but with a half inch longer shaft. I was pretty surprised as I hadn't ever heard of anybody having longer shafts in wedges. After a few more shots I was completely sold! Then I tried the 52 deg 588 RTX with the extra half inch and that was equally as nice, the sole of the club was then taped up and a plastic board put down so we could check the lie and see if any adjustments required making, again I had never really heard of any body have the lie of a wedge checked! I wasn't shocked to see I required the clubs 2 degrees up right the same as my irons. We then talked about grips and having big hands we opted for a mid size grip and then we matched them with the grips i have fitted on my irons (Multicompound Reds). All in all the next time I want to buy some wedges I won't hesitate to book another fitting and I would probably consider driving down to Studley again!

We then started talking balls... talking about my current ball which is an RBZ urethane after looking at my spin figures it was decided that the AD333 Tour would be the most suited ball for me. Sadly I couldn't try these out as they are gold dust at the minute.

I have to say the food at studley wood was really nice and I have to agree with Adam that the course was lovely as well, it was just unlucky that we played the day the greens had been cored but the club officials could not apologies enough! I would definitely travel down to play the course again in summer!

I had a really good day Adam is a top chap and I will not be surprised to see his handicap come tumbling down this year!

Good write up Rob, I had my society day today and bored people to death talking about the fitting... still really buzzing about it.

My driving was pretty shocking today but put together a round of 88... (+19).

Can't wait for the wedges to arrive and get acquainted with them.

Nice write-ups lads, next Tuesday cannot come quick enough for my Mizuno fitting, it's like being a kid at Christmas again.

Great write up. If you get a chance to play Studley in the summer, their greens are excellent. I think Sarah Stirk from Sky Golf is a member there too!

Just had my first round with the new wedges and balls..... Firstly, the balls feel really solid off the face but grippy at the same time. I noticed on several occasions that the ball had stopped pretty quickly on the greens judging by how close to my pitch marks they were.

As for the club's. .... They felt like that were meant for me. Took a couple of shots to work out their distances but I had 2 shots into flags which I absolutely nailed from just inside 80 yards and left less than 6ft putts. They make the balls spin a lot!

Love them love them love them.
