I cant understand why people dont clean/wipe their spanners after playing a shot and before putting it back in the bag.Would anyone use a greesy spoon/fork to eat or a dirty towel todry themseleves with the obvious answer would be no!But week in week out there are guys who turn up with mucky clubs and then moan about how badly they played.I have one of those small retractable brushes and a wet towel on my bag.The ball responds as I want it to because the club used is clean.Have never seen pros playing with dirty clubs even when their havig a bounce game without a caddy.

The main reason I carry a big towel and not one of the little beer mat sized ones - dip one end of the towel in water before starting off so it's soaking but not dripping everywhere. Wash the clubs after every shot and use the dry end for...errr drying them!!

Also handy for cleaning your ball without having to trek to a ball washer and worry about noisy scrubbing in the middle of someone's backswing!!

Warm soapy water when I get home, an old toothbrush (the wife's :D) gets the grooves spotless.

By the sounds of all this it seems I need to have an inspection of my grooves and get some soapy water ready tonight!

I clean them every so often but think I should pay more attention to the grooves with a brush.

Be careful when using soap. Washing up liquid has an ingredient that can corrode the glue in the ferrol so try something mild. I.I.R.C. Medwayjon recommended car shampoo as it is mild enough for your clubs.

I always have to bite my tongue when I see people playing with dirty irons, its just unbeleivable.

All I can assume is there are a lot of people who are content with playing very mediocre golf, without the slightest intention to improve.

I play with a guy who never ever ever ever cleans his clubs. he pulls irons out of his bag that are caked in mud with the silver colour of the clubface barely visible.

It drives me round the bend, i keep wanting to steal them and clean them!! We argue about it loads but he refuses to even wipe them down.

Me....everytime a club leaves my bag it gets cleaned before it is put back without fail!

I try to always clean my irons when playing. There is always that instance where for the sake of speed of play we can forget to be a fasidious as we'd like when we've played our shot & walked on in a curcumstance like this.

TBH if I pull a club out & find it like this there is an inward mental groan, kicking myself, as a club left in the bag like this is harder to clean the grooves out, when its been sitting for a while

But would never try & use that club again until I've given it a good brushing Out & clean down with my towel.

I have occasionally dampened my towel, but oft don't remember to do so. But will certainly try & make sure I ether have a dampened end or a seperate damp towel on me (Have in the past done this & found it works)

On the subject of washingup liquid I never let the hozel of the clubs get into the soapy water, but will try & use car shampoo instead in future anyhow, as its got to be cheaper than pinching the washing up liquid out of the kitchen.

I sold some of my ex-clubs to a mate at work who has just started the game & he never cleans them as he goes, his woods also get caked up & go straight back into headcovers.... Really gets my hackles that. I've gotten onto him about it but it really seems to fall on deaf ears. Though he must have at least a little self respect & pride as he recently came up to me & asked the best way to clean them at home.

TBH.. I suspect his sister took one look at them & has told him to get them clean as they will have looked a right state.

Cleaning clubs at my my place is mostly swilling the head in the next water and towelling off - must check the grooves.

That said, I was told that taking lumps out of the course on a practise swing was a no-no.

If I get a bit of mud or graa on the face of the club after the practice swing I wipe it on my left trouser leg (always wear dark blue trousers). I can get into the habit of doing that even if there's nothing on the face - almost as part of my pre-shot routine.

Oddly, I clean my clubs on an Arsenal towel. This makes no sense, as if I am going to wipe my dirty clubs with a towel, surely I should be using a Tottenham one to wipe my mud onto. Why soil an Arsenal one?

I think sometimes practicality comes into this one too, I think Homer has the most sensible and practical method, its what I do myself. When I clean them at home, I just use water, my own little plastic pokey thing for the grooves and a Towel.

But I am occasionally guilty of not cleaning during a practice round (Bad Boy!) although I wouldnt do this in a serious round at least I learn the effects of a dirty club so as to know the effects are true.

Using that logic I ought to clean my clubs with a Newcastle towel. But wouldn't be that cruel, been away from the NorthEast too long.

Monty once said, the single question he gets asked the most during pro-ams is " how do you put backspin on the ball ?" , he would then look at their clubs and show them how to clean them.

nuff said.
