Does anyone here play a shot without cleaning the grooves on the club face? and how much performance do you lose when not doing so?

Reason I ask is that I've just cleaned my clubs for the first time in weeks maybe months, some of the grooves where full of mud. Also sometimes when i have my practice swing i'll take a divot but rather than brush the grooves on the clubface i just wipe it.

Think i could be making the game harder for myself before i've even hit the ball? :D

It's only taken me 2 years but i've just decided I wont be taking my shot untill i know the club face is dirt free.

You have made the right move mate, I love cleaning my clubs when HID is engrossed in he soaps. Clean grooves produce so much more spin on the ball and look ace.

p.s. Bring on the 20th!

NOt only do clean grooves help performance they also look better and so fill you with more confidence when hitting a shot, well it does with me.

Minty, that's a basic, u gotta have clean grooves, get one of those little pocket groove cleaners(2 brushes and a retractable spike). If not a tee point does the trick for the grooves.

Definitely need clean grooves- why do you so often see a pro / caddie on tv using a tee or something similar to clean grooves? Due to the improved control they give you. I really should clean my clubs after my practice session today actually as I'm playing friday...

I have one of those little things but i'll be standing there waiting for everyone to play and take a few practice swings. When it comes to my turn I take one final practice swing, usually taking some turf. I then feel the need to rush and take my shot rather than take my time, clean the grooves then hit the little white fella.

That is a good point and I know what you mean, however the trick is to avoid taking a divot on the practice swing and just brush the turf. I have done this before though, cleaned my grooves, taken a divot with my practice swing and then thought I can't be bothered to clean them again- it's not really the time thing that worries me I'm just too lazy :D

I use a tee from my pocket if necessary to clean mud out the grooves. I soak the bottom of my towel and keep it damp through the round. The towel is used after every shot to keep the club face clean.

I'll always wipe the club before I play a shot if it has picked up any debris during my practice shots. I pay almost OCD attention to my short irons in particular (8 down to LW) and will make sure I get a tee into the grooves while waiting for others to make sure there is no residual dirt and will wipe and check the grooves after I've played

I clean mine with a towel and brush after every shot, if I get mud on the face after a practice shot, I'll go back to my bag and clean it again!
Thinnk it drives my mate crazy but it is just looking at me at address, all dirty! Like Homer, bit OCD! ;)

I think i'll be cleaning the face before every shot from now on, I dont care if it slows things down, I think i play to quick anyway so this could be the bit of disclipline (sp.) i need.

Havent really thought about this before. But after reading this a wee trip to AG tomorrow will sort that out. I said I wasnt go to buy any golf equipment in March.... Surely I can get something for less than a Fiver???

It really makes sense as long as you dont hold up play unduly then its a no brainer.

Maybe thats why I dont get it close to the pin! :p

Still under a fiver so i'd get the second one.

Why buy a cleaner---just use a tothbrush, soft bristles and no problem getting into the grooves.

I always clean my clubs walking towards the green.

A clean club face is very important if you want max performance from the club. Having a dirty club can do a number of things (mostly miniscule in appearance but nevertheless there) like creating the wrong kind of spin.
If the dirt has grit in it, it will cause a different impact effect as well as damage to the ball, but the greatest effect is reduced ball strike power. If the grooves are compacted with dirt this affects the club like a damper. Those gifted with skills in the short game would notice immediately if they inadvertantly left the club face caked in crap. ;)

I cleaned my clubs for the first time in a long while before playing on Tuesday, and felt I had a lot more control over shots.

When I get my new irons I'm sure I'll spend alot more time keeping them shiny though. :D
