Don't worry not for me!!!! Just come back from American Golf on my lunch break and there was a guy in there agonising over a decision to buy a chipper. He was chatting to a member of staff who fair play to him was being polite whilst referencing the fact that he'd just use a 7 iron (in the vain hope the guy would listen to reason and change his mind). Anyway this guy is now off to conduct more research on chippers before making a purchase.

After he parted company with the guy in AG I was so tempted to go over and recommend a chipping lesson but bottled it.

Would you have had a kind word in his ear?

All credit to AG for being too embarrassed to sell a chipper.

Maybe they could have a chipper amnesty - take in a chipper and get a £10 voucher to spend on a proper club! :)

No as it is nothing to do with me.

Yeah right, would have said about a chipping lesson and the 7 iron thing!

Wonder how much chipper research he can do, there are not that many on general sale are there? Besides, are they not called 'putting wedges' now.

i really dont see what the big taboo with chippers is? golfers will use drivers the size of footballs, woods half the size (hybrids), and putters as tall as a grandfather clock all to make the game that bit easier. why are people embarrassed to use a device that simply gets the ball over the fringe and rolling. its exactly the shot that people use a 7 iron for and i see them make a hash of it all the time.the leading edge of the club gets stuck in the ground etc. why must we make this more difficult than it really is? i had this very debate with my playing parnter on the course last week.

anyone that doesnt have one and struggles with the short game is a mug imo. :ears:

Personally I wouldnt of have told him anything as I wouldnt know anything about his game. People on here moaned at someone who stated they could tell what clubs someone would need from a 100 paces and he got moaned at like anything, so anyone saying they would tell him this and that is going down the same route as you dont know why he is considering the purchase or what he has tried in the past.

I heard quite a lot of the conversation and a lesson wasn't mentioned just that he tried a 7 iron and didn't have any luck with it. Felt sorry for the guy as he genuinely wanted to get better but I just felt that instruction and not a purchase was the right answer.

That said garyinderry may have a point, horses for courses. I'm just not a big fan of Blackpool beach donkey rides

I used a niblick early last year for about 3 months. Mainly for practice as I had lost confidence in my pitching skills. Worked well for me, and once I got the rhythm back I went back to my normal wedge.

Great way to get better scores, and to increase your confidence levels.

You might want to pop one in your bag to see if you can get your handicap down a bit.

I'm just off down to American Golf in Bournemouth to buy a chipper...

Not for me (honest) for my old man as a birthday present. His short game is truely terrible!!!

I'm like his mind coach in reverse. He plays 3 times a week, has lessons, plays off 28 and his best stableford score is 36 once. only broken 30 twice.

it's either a chipper or a fishing rod !!:D

Personally I'd like chippers to go straight into Golf Room 101 but I do understand for some it really is the only way then can chip around the greens. I guess as everyone should be able to enjoy this great game I'd resist from consigning them. I have my own shot nightmares but haven't even thought about getting one as its all in my head that I can't play a chip shot properly

I think chippers go into the same group as hybrids.

People buy hybrids because they are easier to hit than a 3-4 iron. People buy chippers because its easier to chip with one than a 7 iron.

i dont use one myself. ive had a go with a mates around the 9hole course and it does exactly what it says on the tip. with a bit of practice i think anyone could become a wizard with it. The big golf manufacturers stay clear of them as pros dont use them. if taylor made brought out their new 2012 chipper i believe people would be all over it. its the smaller cheaper brands that make them so theres an elitist side to it. i can see the benefits of these clubs to people starting out and anyone with a 20+ handicap should have one of these in the bag.
