Very much part of my news childhood growing up in the NW of England. Warm, friendly, hugely professional. He kept that going throughout his long career. A sad day.

The best story about this statue is Dickie had to pay to get it raised up on the plinth as people kept putting things, usually condoms, un his finger. As he was a typical tight Yorkshireman, that must have hurt.

Amazing to think it’s almost 30 years since he retired from umpiring. And a decent opening batsman too. Lack of opportunities saw him move on from Yorkshire. Although he didn’t score many centuries, he still managed that holy grail of scoring over 1,000 runs in a season. Sadly, a persistent knee injury cut short his career.
For those who like reading biographies, his is a good read.

The great and good of the game who I've heard interviewed this evening have all said that he was a great umpire and beloved character.
The only thing a few mentioned was that bowlers would have a bit of banter with him as he only ever gave lbw decisions if it was a dead cert to hit halfway up middle stump.
