Carry and roll

I've decided to take my Driver, two wood and three wood out of my bag. At the London Club on Friday I hit a punchy driver down the first (547 yard par 5). Can you imagine my embarrassment when I went through the green??? There's water in front of the green so I must have carried 550 yards.

It was downhill I suppose.........

Yeh, I normally lay up on Par5's that are under 600yds, normally a 9-iron off the tee and chip on.

That's proper course management for you. Why risk thinning it through the back into trouble? 9-iron lay up=smart play.

This winter has been the only time i could measure distance properly with the GPS

A normal driver has been going between 245-255 carry 'ball plugging'

It always amazes me when i hit one out the screws and get my reading 247,kind of crushes the ego.

Going off the scorecard gives a wrong reading for me for example last summer i played a 424 par 4 and left around 75 yards left, there is no way i could possibly hit the ball 350 even swinging out my shoes

It has been interesting using my SC5 to measure a few drives over the last year or so. I play with some guys that swear they hit 250 easily. It measured 229 (followed by the yeah but I didn't hit it properly, it was wet/cold/the 3rd Thursday of the month etc). I've also measured some (HTL) who have hit a genuine 300+ drive. I agree with Andieritchie though that it can be a soul destroyer when you have nailed it and it comes out somewhere around 230-240.

Personally I know I'm a short hitter so never worry if someone says they hit it xx. I'll make up my mind after a few holes and see if xx means into the trees or not

I think that's a lot of the problem. People look at the scorecard and see how far they've got left which gives them their driving distance.

On my course, there are holes measuring over 300 yards which are considerably shorter, measured on a GPS, if you go straight at the flag.

But then, to be fair, that's the only measure we've had until GPS & Laser Range Finders arrived.

You only use your driver a max of 14 times a round (most courses).

If you use your putter twice as much you've had a great day.

Which would you rather be, a long driver or a good putter??

Rather than ask on average how long you hit, how many putts do you average a round?

There are only ten or so people who are longer than me off the tee at our club (3 of them are Pros) and if I hit the nuts off of one in winter on a calm day then I could squeak one out there at 250yds.

I would say I average about 235 - 240 during the winter months.

In my time playing with all sorts of handicap levels i have seen the odd bomber who plays off 20. But 250 average ........never in a month of Sundays.

For the last 2 months (since i actually started counting/recording) i've been taking just over 33 putts per round. I've got scope to improve as im hitting 50% GIR. too many 2 putts and the occaisional 3...!

I know im not a long hitter, i asked about everyones average club distance last week, not just the driving distance just to compare what other people (off various handicaps) are hitting. I dont have a GPS or Laser-thingy so Im working my average out off the yard markers on the course, including deducting for forward tees etc. Our course is short so i only use a driver 6 times at the most. On some holes Im laying up to avoid the streams and brooks incase I dont flush it.

Id rather knock 5 putts off my average and lose another 20 yards to be honest

From what I remember of last summer (seems so long ago) my good drives went anywhere between 250 and 290 depending on slope and wind.

I'm not normally one for measuring drives with my SC but last time I played I caught one so well that I thought I'd measure it to see the difference winter makes. It was 230. Demoralising.

Can't wait for the warmer weather and harder ground again!

When we meet I'll be buying you a beer! :D

But my question is how far have you been hitting your drives with these major 3 yards of roll

3 yards! you'd be lucky. I've walked up and seen pitch marks in front of some drives recently. (Not mine, admittedly)
Backspin? or Black Magic Voodoo Trickery?

Bit o' googling found this...eye opening

"Although definitive research is scarce, Golf Digest surveys show that the average golfer's driving distance increased from 193 to 205 yards in the last decade. In the same period, PGA Tour distances increased almost 30 yards. Even these numbers for average golfers may be generous because a test of Golf Digest Schools students in March still showed only a 195-yard average."
"While the typical amateur is still struggling with the 200-yard standard (even if he thinks and says he hits it 250), the PGA Tour driving-distance average has jumped from 260.4 in 1993 to 279.8 in 2002 to 287.8 this year. Ask a veteran tour player and he'll say that in the last three years he's picked up yardage that previously wouldn't be gained in a decade."

For my own interest I measured quite a lot of the drives today at Parkwood and last Friday at The London Club - not just mine but playing partners as well. (I hasten to add that I didn't measure the skyed shot to the 12th at TLC)

Most were about the 200 yds give or take 15 yds or so, and there was a bit of roll due to the nature of the fairways. The odd one out of the screws may have gone 235 - 245 but those were few and far between and mostly downhill with a following breeze.

I never cease to be amazed by the number of Forumers who are able to hit their average drives such prodigious distances. Puts most of us to shame.

I consider myself a longish hitter - in that I generally spank it quite a bit further than most folk I play with. Last week I was thumping it really well - quite a bit better than normal. The absolute best for the day was a measured 250 - the average for the day about 235. So normal average for this time of year? Probably about 225-230. And like I say - I think I hit it a long way?

I think I need to stay away from forum meets...
