Can anyone give me a reason for this?

So I am quite new to golf still, played 4 rounds now and used an app on my phone to track shots, my average distance with my driver is 230yrds (ranging from 205-265) average with my 4hybrid is 221yrds (ranging from 210-225)

I seem to be a lot straighter with my hybrid so used it quite a bit from the tee. I know I don't have much data but if I hit my 5i an average of 160 isn't a 60yard jump to a 4h far too big? And then again only 9yrds between my hybrid and driver is tiny ( I probably don't hit my driver as well as my hybrid so the odd time I have hit it great it's gone 250+ I have 19 tracked shots with my hybrid and 36 with my driver

Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it. Very early days for you. Golf is a game of mastering inconsistency. The more you play, the more consistent you will become. And don't get hung up by stats.

What are the respective lofts of the 4H and the 5i?

As far as I know distant is based on club loft and swing speed assuming the swings are the same. I find that my swing spped with my woods is fast that with my irons, that might have something to do with it.

There are others with more knowledge on this sort of thing than me on here though.

I would forget the lofts and clubs involved - without seeing the swings it's pretty irrelevant where a player doesn't have a consistent swing across clubs (and here he clearly doesn't! ) The 4h numbers are tour level, the 5i is average handicapper as is the driver (given the variation)

On the balance of probability you are comfortable with the 4H, swing it hard and fast, and most likely with a draw/hook from a hooded face at impact. May be related to club swing wrights but it's more likely a mental thing with different swings.

Tend to see 2 distinctly different routes to starting up in the game with one group who find the 4H and 5w to be their golden clubs and the other for whom the 4 or even 3i are their go to club that they can propel 230 off the tee!

He can either just keep going, in which case it will eventually all sort itself out as he hits the driver more consistently and applies a more consistent swing across the rest to - or see a pro.

Every round is so different. Sometimes I can hit a fairway wood just as far as my driver. Just depends on how 'on it' you are on that day. If you have an idea as to how far you can hit each club it helps, certainly when looking at hitting shots into greens. But I wouldn't worry too much on exact distances.

Piece of advice for you, drop the gadgets before they turn your brain to mush, the last thing you need at the moment is to be worrying about gaps, you just need to concentrate on/work on hitting the ball in the right direction for now, believe me you'll do yourself more harm than good if you start picking holes in your game...

I've spent the last couple of years banging my head against a brick wall wondering why this and why that, all I did was turn myself into a quivering wreck and all but gave up on the game in the end, finally I went back to basics, I dropped all the excess baggage and now have a 3-wood, a set of T-zoid irons, a couple of wedges and a putter in the bag, that's my lot, well that and a large supply of balls anyway...

Anyway my point is I'm enjoying the game once again rather than spending every waking hour beating myself up over it...

Dont take my word for it though, your welcome to find out for yourself but it will destroy you if you don't keep it on a leash !...

I know what you mean :) I don't think I have the personality though to let things like that put me off :) I find it interesting looking at all my shots after the game, The same playing football with my Adidas Mi coach ha.

It was just surprised how there is such a large difference between a 5i and 4h, I know I dont hit my driver great but hopefully that will come with practice

If you're using hybrid off the tee a lot you're possibly using more of a 'wood' swing, sweeping the ball off the tee?

With your 5 iron you're hopefully using more of a descending blow as people are usually taught for iron shots, which will have a lot more spin in comparison to the 'swept' 4h.

Finally, as already mentioned, if you like your hybrid you're more likely to be swinging it faster, or basically not holding anything back.

Have you started putting rounds in for your h'cap yet mate?

I'm guessing that you are either getting misreads on the app or your 4h has a really strong loft and isn't actually 4h (somewhere about 23-24).

If you are even striking the 5 iron somewhat ok the difference should not be 60 yards because they are not exactly weak irons

Your shaft stiffnesses are all the same are they? Just make sure.;)

I'm not sure on this, any way to tell? My irons have kbs your 90 and my hybrid is kurokage I've had a look but can't see it mentioned. My driver is regular flex.

My hybrid has 24 degree loft and 5i is 26 degree. My app is one where you click track when you hit your ball and then click again when at the ball, so can't see it being too inaccurate.

Remember when we played at styal and I had one shot with my hybrid and topped it 😅 I have practiced quite a bit with it now.
I have had 4 hits with it off the fairway too, all over 200yrds. Interestingly I've just checked what numbers I got when I went on a gc2 last week and it was 195 average from 10 shots all off the ground for hybrid and 181 for 5i off the ground.

It normally says on the shafts, or gives you a clue, and most of the time S means stiff etc. If not, your pro might be able to help.

I've got 5 kids and a natural ability to let things go straight over my head but it still got to me, I'm one of those annoying people who seem to be able to pick something up and do well with it but I must say this golf lark nearly had me beat !...:fore:

As someone else said get the gadgets and throw them in the bin. In 2014 I got obsessed with numbers and so on and it's counterproductive and does In fact turn your brain to soup. Use the app for average distances and stop there. Know your average and max distance.

As your game changes so will the stats, but at only four games in I'd get a course of basics foundational skills lessons to get rid of the bad habits early on. This alone should tighten that gapping.
