Caddie_White Overalls_US Masters

Look it up...........
i have, found lots of stuff but none relating directly to the caddies gear though.

Whilst I agree racism is totally wrong. If we are to stop every tradition that has any racist undertone then there won't be many traditions left. In any walk of life. The past was dark, and there are still morons who have these thoughts. But changing things because of them is letting them win.

I dont know about winning, all caddies had to be black and all caddies had to wear white dougerees.............they had no choice. The players had no choice. I can remember my old man talking about it back in the late sixties onward, he thought it was terrible then and he was right. Not only that, it went on for many years.

I mentioned at the start "Leaving aside the history of the garment and why it was introduced, it is the single scruffiest thing about the tournament"

The point I was making is I just don't get that at one of the most manicured courses in the world at a club which takes an almost perverse delight in its management, control and preparation of every detail right down to insisting that media refer to patrons and not spectators, spending months recreating their cheese sarnie after swapping suppliers and even dictating the size of a patrons 'bum-bag' that's allowed to be carried, tells me that the poorly fitting uniform must also be a deliberate conscious decision... and I cant think why!

There is great danger in branding something racist without anything to back it up.... I see nothing. You seem to have taken a colour and place in the world and put the rest of the story together yourself.

I know what you mean, if they are going to make them wear the boiler suit they should at least make one's that fit.

I'm not sure all caddies had to be black.. They were drawn from the poor neighborhood. Which were black. They didn't 'have to be black'... There is a difference. They had to wear dungarees to cover up the shabby clothing.

I worked on a community project scheme in the 80's as decorator and had to wear white dungarees. My black co-worker didn't seem offended by it. He was thankful to have a job, as was I.;)

To be fair the founder actually said "as long as I'm alive, all members will be white and all caddies will be black". But I still haven't seen any reason why the outfits themselves are racist. I agree with op. They could be smartened up, but surely we'd have to change colour as them being white is racist apparently?

Dont know if thats for me or not..but Augusta was racist. I'll take my chance in court.

This is ridiculous.... Such a random statement. The world can never heal its self if people make uneducated, random comments like this.... I am actually pretty worked up about this.
