• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Burgled, again.

Feel for you Murph.

I've got (and always will have) a big dog. Her bark is 1000 times worse than her bite but who wants to hang about to find out when nigh on 6 stone of dog is barking??

sorry to here about your misfortune, know the feeling.
Wife was frightened for ages after our robbery.
Would not come in the back door until I fitted lights and new locks.
They put superglue on a bic pen case and turned the key which we had left in the lock.
Bas**rds just took her hand bag off the table, the dog barked the house down.

When is the house going up for sale? My wife never settled after our house was broken into just before Christmas one year. Then a minor porch fire (Started by some little b*****d) a few years later and one option was put on the table, move or stay yourself.

In case you are wondering we have a lovely new house.

No intention of moving, just need to upgrade all of our security. It's silly really, as once they have broken in, it is pretty obvious where we are deficient.

As an aside, did you know patio door handles aren't standard, and if you break one (the burglars did) you need to spend £1400 on a new set of doors? Hope the insurance pays out this time.

Truly sorry to hear the distressing news Murph. Have to agree with Robobum and his big dog. Years ago, we had a Doberman and every house in the road was burgled apart from ours and the two either side.

No substitute for the threat of being savaged

Neither did I, but my wife had other idea's. Hope all goes well with the insurance.

Chris, I'm very sorry to hear this pal. I wish you and Mrs Murph all the very best.

I grew up in South London where the adage 'if it ain't nailed down it'll be nicked' is well used.

I'm absolutely paranoid about being burgled. All of our windows are double glazed and locked (with the keys removed and out of sight). The front door is also a double glazed, uPVC one with a superb lock as is our back door. I have a light out the front, a security light down the side and a security light out the back.

I also have a very good alarm system.

Plus, sporadically and stratigically placed around my home are various 'weapons' which would be used in the event of an intruder.

We had some burglaries in our area recently and the POlice said that the homes targetted all had one thing in common.....

NO ALARM!

My advice is to get a good alarm fitted. It's deterrent value is well worth the out lay.

I have to agree with the above, an alarm or a false alarm box is a big deterrent. A false or real security camera with a sign will also make people think twice. If they want in or decide your house is their target, they WILL get in.

House breakings, sorry burglary down south, is usually a case of in and out now, a quick grab and away. Laptops, ipods, mobile phones, jewelry digital cameras. Small easy to dispose of items for £20-£50 down the pub, on the street wherever! Its easy to say now, but try and keep these in places which are out of view and not obvious. Gone are the days of loading up a vehicle with the TV video, hi-fi etc.

Security wise, sounds as though you have most of it covered already Murph.I would recommend an old fashioned mortis lock over the new "police approved" lever lock UPVC doors every day of the week.

Your local police should be able to give you a free crime prevention survey if you ask them.

bad luck mate, time to upgrade the real murph I think

and a sign 'Wanted, playmate for house cat. The last one wore out!'

I can still remember the time we were burgled when I was a kid, didn't affect me much but I remember the effect on my mum of seeing a dirty black footprint on the arm of a chair - it was that more than the things that were stolen (nicked sounds too casual).
