Annual break in. Lost an Apple mac, and yet more jewelery this time. Trying the insurance, but we'll see.

This time they stood on a wheely bin and broke a stained glass window half way up the landing.

Got people coming round for quotes for security lighting, and an alarm, and more locks, etc next week.

The window they broke in through is an old one, with no lock, not dbl glased etc. We never open it, so have not really considered it a potential access point.

Seriously guys, have a look around your house. Mooch around the outside, and review each potential access point from a burglars point of view. There's alot of it about.Think about where you store ladders, bins, etc.

Police useless as always. Told loads of sories to the mrs which scared her half to death (armed gangs robbing houses in Harpenden, some guy having his front door chopped in with an axe while he was upstairs, etc). Thanks, useful info there.
Sadly I was in China, so not about. She has done really well to get the window boarded over, and set up some quotes etc. Some nice friends volunteered to(and did) move in til I got home.

Pissed off of Watford.

Not the best news mate, never had it happen as an adult but remember having done at my mothers 3 times in a year when i was a kid,the last time my dad and some of his mates found out who did and got our stuff back every last bit of it to. I always wondered how they did that :D.

Hope you get on ok mate, its just the thought of some junkie ransacking your house ,not good.

I know how it feels to have it happen when you're out of the country and can't do anything to help, so you have my commiserations.

Police were about as useful as I expected. I honestly don't know what it is they do, but it certainly doesn't seem to be helping and protecting us.

Best of luck mate.

Sorry to hear that Chris - bunch of barstewards whoever did it. Seriously though might be worth asking who may have been hanging around whilst all your building work was being done. Were the builders sound as well?

Hope it doesn't spoil your Christmas.

Builders are sound, it is the usual junkies. We didn't lose that much, usual stuff you can get in a back pack. Haven't replaced half what was nicked last time, so they won't have made much out of it.

Key thing is, look around your houses.

They get in where it is easy (in retrospect), and mainly empty drawers in the master bedroom, and nick laptops/computers that are visible.

They always look for an exit down stairs, so don't leave keys accessible, and where posible make life hard for them. Get a safe, keep stuff in it, keep windows closed, and locked. If youdon't have locks, get them fitted.

We have been done twice now, and whilst it isn't nice, you learn more every time, and it is all about making your house difficult.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

I am very security conscious.

I have a fire-proof and insurance approved safe bolted to the floor internally 10" deep which any valuables and important documents go in.

Aside from that, all of the windows have locks and are locked when not home, I have 2 locks on the front door.

I also have a burglar alarm system with remote monitoring.

I also ensure that I have a tool laying around upstairs incase all the above fails and we woke-up to an intruder.

Safe - Yes
Paranoid - Perhaps

Sorry to hear that Murph.
Not good at any time, even worse around Christmas time. Hope it doesn't spoil yours.

Strange isn't it, we never really seriously consider home security until we are touched by burglary, be it our own home or someone else we know.

Recently I had new locks fitted to my doors to replace the cheap euro profile locks installed by the manufacturer. Also had door jams fitted to my French doors. Overall cost me £245! Money well spent if it prevents a break-in. ;)

Ouchie!! Sorry to hear that Murph. Perhaps a 10ft fence and a spiked gate plus a security light and a big feckin' sign that says "Smile, you are on camera"?

I hope you get things sorted.

It's sad that we live in a world where we have to make our homes secure as possible when they should be comfortable for ourselves and our families to live in.

hope the scum that did it get what they deserve

Maplin.co.uk do a well priced outdoor/indoor night vision four camera system for about £299.00 it may be worth having a look into

There's no point trying to catch people... deterrent is the order of the day. I did see a sign inside someone's property that said "Smile, you're on camera" and it had an arrow pointing upwards... you couldn't help but look up... and there was a camera... a nice full view straight into my face.

Add that to a gate/security light and an alarm and I guess you've done as much as you can.

Even if you get a couple of "I live here" dog signs with alsatians on them it'll help.

We looked at buying guard-dogs for our business premises after a couple of break-ins to pinch bits off of the cars.

We were informed that we would be liable to prosecution if an intruder was savaged by said dogs so we didnt get them.
