bump n run or fly it high?

when faced with a 30 - 50 yard approach to the flag stick, what do you do? I know it depends on the context? for example, bunker in line = wedge over the hazard.

But when faced with no trouble, flat fairway all the way to the flag, the sensible shot is to bump it up there isnt it?

Unfortunately I cant seem to play these shots as it just doesnt feel right, I know I need to sometimes, but I just like to see the ball up in the air and see it hit the green.

Have I been brainwashed by all the US style golf where it fly's high and lands inches from the flag? Should I play more Links golf to improve this aspects of my game?

Are most people the same?

30 to 50 yards and I would pitch it pretty flat with my 54 off the back foot. I would expect it to run out a bit though.

Either that, or shank it.

Depends on how much room there is on the green to the flag. I personally like to fly the ball on to the green as you generally know what sort of bounce and reaction you're going to get. Bumping them in along the fairway has many associated problems , however if your course is rock hard and the greens are lightning then you may have no choice.

It's something that you'd be wise spending a few minutes practicing one day when you've got a free few minutes. Take a little more club and keep your hands in front of the ball for a good strike and practice getting the feel for the shot

From 50yds I would usually pitch the ball, unless the landing area was difficult. What does surprise me is the number of golfers who hit the ball high from the fringe and first cut by the green, when either a putt or a bump and run is a much safer and easier shot.

From that distance normally a 52, or in old money a PW! Play it reasonably low, and allow for a fair bit of run out. Well that's what's meant to happen when I play it. My head and hands though might as well belong to two different people!!

A: The roll out will be an unknown length
B: The fringe or fairway between you and the flag can and often will cause strange bounces.
I agree it is the percentage shot but be prepared to pull out any hair you have left when you get a bad bounce or it checks up too much or indeed runs out 20ft past the hole.

I agree with this. The further away from the green you get the more difficult it is to play along the ground due to the different bounces etc.

Just around the green I would always, if possible, use a putter 1st choice, then 9,8,7,6 iron depending on how far I want to run it.

20feet past the hole from 50 yards. Great shot for me that would be!!

50 yards would be a fly high, 30 yards is a differnt cattle of fish.

i used to be a 52* man from anywhere between 10 yards and 75 yards, but im not being more creative with anything from a 7i up to stock PW/46*. Asses and play each shot on its merits, it makes for better scrambling in my opinion. No two shots are the same...

I prefer to fly it but based on advice tried some safer bump n runs recently. Ended up with a worse result. I think JD is right practice required!

No trouble in front of the green is good, but sometimes what is behind the green will also change my selection of shot.

Trouble with any new shot you might be trying, because you don't use it the shot doesn't feel right, because it doesn't feel right you don't use it.

In the air for me , takes out the chance of bad hop / bounce etc.. if flag is on front il try a one bounce short & let it run up , again tho your relying on the bounce to be straight ,, real reason tho is i cant play the bump n run too well .. a mate of mine that i play with (golf , play golf with, save the remarks ) )has the best bump n run game ive ever seen , pure class with it ... will i need to learn the bump & run for the ballylifffin trip on the links course ???

I prefer to play a bump and run shot personally, unless there is anything between me and the flag like a bunker, sprinkler head or really uneven ground.

its the bounces i have trouble with fred ,, with courses hardening up the bounces are to irregular, i think luck becomes a major part of it ,, at least if you pop it on the green it should run out pretty straight .. should ..

We tend to have quite lush fringes due to green and fringe sprinklers. The fairways have no watering, so are like concrete. Bump and runs are tough, as the bounce (if any) can be very unpredictable, and the ball can easily snag up. Flying it onto the green gives more consistent results.

I tend to try and land the ball at the front of the green and change club depending on the abount of roll I want. If the flag is at the front I'll send it in higher with a sand wedge, if the flag's at the back and I want the ball to roll up to it i'll use a PW. My landing spot never changes though. If I try to fly a ball to a back flag I tend to go over the back.
