Broke a 100!!!!

I've always been very wristy and have tried or are trying to stop bending my wrists too early which is taking some time. My problem is that I don't have enough spare time to go practise or play so it could be a week or it could 3 weeks before I play again.

Same here, had a lesson last week but wont get to work on anything for a few weeks.
Only get to play 2/3 times a month really.

It really does! Was my New Years resolution, so to have hit it, with three good months of the year left, has made me a very happy man.

Well done! Good to see you coming in at 97 instead of creeping in at 99. Did you feel the pressure coming down the last?

What happened to December? I thought there were 4 months left of the year!!!

I do, because I am playing golf within my limitations, and at my handicap / ability level it's had a massive effect.

I am aiming to play every hole as a 5, trying to save shots on the par 3s, bogey the par 4s, and I am trying to par the 5s.... I am still getting the odd 7 on the card, but I am confident that if I keep playing as I am, then those 7s will not be there anymore and I will be low to mid 90s.

I am working hard at the range with my woods and driver, as I am lacking distance off the tee atm. I can place my 4i about 200 yds, which is what I have been doing for nearly all of the holes, unless they are very open. But if I could get that extra 20/30 yds or more it would make a big difference to my game. Becoming much better with my short irons and wedges and putting as it happens. Just struggle with woods and driver off the tee atm....

200 yards with a 4 iron is good, that's not exactly short.

What distance do you get with the following; (i don't know what woods you have)
Driver -
3 wood -
5 wood -
5 iron -
7 iron -
9 iron -

Your strategy is good. 5 on every hole gets you round in 90, so it is an excellent way to work towards breaking 100 consistently and 90 in the near future.

At the moment....

Driver - 230 (if hit straight)
3 wood - 220 (if hit straight)
5 wood - Hybrid 200 (if hit straight)
5 iron - 180 - easy swing
7 iron - 150 - easy swing
9 iron - 130 - easy swing

Irons I have much more control over... my woods and driver are all more or less the same difference, and I am just not getting the consistency atm. That being said yesterday I hit two drives and two 3w. Drive was actually about 240, and 3w about 220. The other shot on each was a duff and a slice....

Because I am so conscious of trying to break a 100 and consistenly, I am now playing quite safe golf and I am reluctant to use them.....

that makes perfect sense. You are getting good distance with your irons and not enough extra in your driver to warrant using it.

Something you might want to check out - google Sam Snead's swing. He used to drive his right leg into the ground during his downswing. It would create more power into the ball and also create a straighter ball flight.

Maybe try this at the range next time you are there, see if that helps get your drives up by 30 yards. Good luck.

Exactly, the risk of using the driver and woods isn't being rewarded enough. That being said, I have a lot of control recently with my irons, so I am desperate to try and get that on the woods and drivers.

Sam Snead vid looks good. Thanks!

My aim after joining a club in June, was to break 100 by the end of September.

In early July everything came together on a warm evening, ball travelled further through the air and I was striking the ball well, and I stood on the 18th tee (our longest par 5) on 87. Even a 9 there gave me a 96 and I was over the moon. Seven weeks later and I have yet to repeat the feat, but scored 101 in my only competition to date (and only round played off of the whites, which I was really chuffed with).

As regards striking the ball I am having the opposite problem. My driver is my most consistent club, but I am struggling with my irons, with approximately an equal chance of a push to the right, a hook or a straight shot.

Good luck with getting consistent scores in the 90s and hopefully I be achieving this too soon.

Just keep working at it. Get a lesson every now and then and commit to what you've been taught. I recently had my grip re tweaked and it has worked wonders.

I am sticking with it and just working hard on getting a good connection with the ball, and the only way to do that is play and practise as much as possible to bed in something that works for you. All year I've been doing self analysis, and constantly tweaking. Thinking too much about everything.

Last month or so I've just stuck with what I've been taught and it has worked wonders.
