Came closest I have ever been to a 79 at my local course. Missed a 3 footer that was dead straight to make it worse i had been sinking them for fun all day.

I consistently hit below 83 but always balls up at the end, finding myself thinking where I lost those 4 blasted shots!

Stuck in a little rut at moment.

How long have you guys waited to break the 80 mark? Is is one of those mile stones that I must persevere with!

When i broke 80 I wasnt looking to do that in one round, I was focused on h/c so when I had got down to a 10 h/c and consistantly played rounds of 80 and below even on unfamiliar corses I knew Id got there and shortly after got an 8 h/c then after a couple of yrs a 6. If I think back to when I was off 16 h/c I think I broke 80 once but dont ask me how? lol.

Im now heading the other way, recently going from 7 to 9h/c so maybe my goal should be breaking 90 lol.

I'm looking forward to the day when shooting 83 counts as being stuck in a rut.....

My target it to cosistently shoot below 95 at the moment although i'm shooting over 100 more than i'm breaking 95 at the moment.

Must work harder

It use to be something I could achieve regularly especially in the summer where short hitters like me get the extra run. Sadly not this year as my game has been about beating 90 every time. Shame about the missed 3 footer but don't worry it will come. Try not to force it and let the score take care of itself otherwise you end up being too defensive and trying to defend your score.

You can obviously get there as your missed putt shows. Just relax and wait for that magic moment to come

Flandango,

I found it hard to do when I took the game up again 5 or 6 years ago but found that not counting your score is the secret. Take the pressure off yourself by not knowing how you're scoring. Only tally it up at the end and you may be in for a pleasant surprise.

I had my best round on christmas eve last year, went up on a cold blustery day for a turbo 18 on my own, HID was out shopping and I couldn't cope with that nonsense. I have to say I didn't strike the ball well at all, but the key was not lashing the ball, end result- 75, six over par. A bit of luck here and there too, but just tried my hardest to retain my tempo.

There is real merit in what John says there. Just take it hole (shot) at a time and concentrate making the lowest possible score per hole. Tally it up at the end and more often than not it's good reading.

I dont bother about my score as well, I just play each shot as if I'm on a record score. When playing a medal I write my own score very small and I never check until the 9th and 18th.

I first broke 80 at a short course, but you've still got to get the ball in the hole. At longer courses I'm happy to break 80.

.... and I never check until the 9th and 18th.

I think my problem is checking at the 9th! I really shouldn't. Monday at Carnoustie with Atticus was a prime example of how NOT to do it.

I'm out in 3 over, knowing I can only be 4 over on the back nine for a 79. I Par the 10th, 3 putt the 11th for bogie, par the 12th and miss a tiddly 2 footer for par on the 13th. So I know I'm 5 over already with 5 to play, including 4 of the toughest holes in Championship golf.

I three putted the 14th for double bogey and the score is officially buggared!

If I hadn't known my score I'm fairly confident I would have done no worse than bogey at them all the way I was playing. But because I knew my score and "went for it" I didn't do any better than double bogey at the last 5. Left a bit of a bitter taste in the mouth. I let those lost strokes from the tiddly putts get to me. Schoolboy error. I should have just played the holes as I saw them as I had been all day.

You live and learn. Ho hum. :D

First time for me was a 78 that I didn't realise I was shooting. I knew I'd played well but didn't realise how well, had to add it up several times. Have since lowered my best to 73 about a year ago, although still capable of scoring 93 with the best of 'em. Stick at, it will happen!!!

My suggestion is not to try harder but to try relax into it more and maybe the flow will come more readily.Trying hard can sometimes have the effect of making it hard.
