Books - One in Ten Do not have Any

Woo hooo! Went into the British Heart Foundation shop in town yesterday. And they let me go into their stock room for a browse. Up high was an 'as new' copy of The Lord of the Rings - the one I was going to buy last week for £10 from Oxfam but was gone the next day. BHF manager said he'd normally put it on eBay and get £15 for it (it cost £50 new) - but I could have it for £10 (as that was what it was in Oxfam). He got it down and it was previously priced at £5. So he gave it to me for that. But the girl on the till knows me as I buy a fair amount - and she gave me it for £2.

And I can donate my LoTR paperback box set to the church bookstall.

Win-win. And me a happy bunny with my lovely big £50 LoTR lavishly illustrated collectors edition. You can't get that with an eBook.

Have to say SiLH, that with all your Christian virtues I'm surprised that you didn't hand over the full £10, or even £15, surely the BHF is a good cause?

I've got that book, it's a beauty and certainly not something that an electronic version could ever replicate. Must have owned it for getting on 30 years!

I told the manageress on the desk how much it should be - she looked at the £5 sticker then looked at me - and said I could have it for £2 (we get on well as she is also Scottish). I'd never hoodwink anyone into getting something for cheaper than it should be - you do know me better. After all - if I am ever given too much change I give it back :)

Besides - I spend a load of money in the BHF shop...

Why do you feel you need to publicly congratulate yourself for doing things most of us would!?

Might be worth searching out the Chimp Paradox book in the BHF shop, might stop you getting yourself in a state over Brexit/Trump etc

Oh for goodness sake...

I was simply responding to the suggestion that I might have diddled BHF out of some money. The point is that the manageress gave me the book for £2 because I spend quite a lot in the shop.
