Some debate as to whether these should be qualifying or not.
My take is that it's matchplay against the course so need to record the scores once the hole wins.

Thoughts ?

Struggling to see why you would want to continue after the hole is over. One of the pros for Bogey comps is that they are a fairly quick form of the game.

The Rules of Golf say that you don't need to record the scores once the hole can't be won, I understood that the handicap scoring is done on some sort of a matrix

We have our one and only bogey comp tomorrow

Do clubs still play Bogey comps.?

My old club in Surrey had a great system.
Competition day was always a Saturday.
Medal on the first of the month, Stableford on the second and Bogey on the third.
Shopping with the 'her indoors' on the fourth.

Worked well in the 1970's:o

For some reason we have two per month, on a Wednesday and they are poorly attended unlike when they have a Wed stableford.

awful format imo, stand on several tees knowing there is no point making birdie as dont get anything for it - ridiculous imo

By my reckoning there are 12 holes on which making a birdie will be to your advantage and the other 6 you need only a par - but a birdie will be more satisfying.

Ours too.
Only reason I entered is MIL is visiting 😉

I think his point was that if you receive a stoke on the hole. if you gross birdie it (nett Eagle) you don't get any more points than if you Gross par (nett birdie) the hole.

And that's why it's often regarded as matchplay against a scratch player who pars every hole. If you were playing matchplay you wouldn't get too upset if you won a hole by 2 clear shots. I just take Bogeys as a different form of comp and get on with it - you stand on the tee and you know exactly the score you need to avoid racking up a loss.

why will it be more satisfying, all it will do is wind me up that Ive made a birdie that I get no reward for?
Look on the bright side - it could be worse...
A guy at my club once got an albatross in a bogey comp. (Hole in one on a par 4 - cost him in the bar and he only got +1 for it)

Lousy format. More often than not there is a tie for the winning score necessitating a playoff. Would much rather play medal or Stableford.

We play a fairly small number in a year (maybe 5 or 6) and I've never known normal countback being unable to decide a winner. I can't think of any reason why it would differ in that respect from medal or stableford.

Because there is a narrower range of possible scores that anyone can have. And, in our comps, there is no count back, there has to be a full 18 hole (sometimes 36 hole) playoff. Most years, our one & only bogey competition finishes up tied.

No countback ?

Even in monthly stableford and medals etc
