Bogey comps.

if you wanted to use another method for countback then yes you'd have to putt out and record all holes ... but that would against the idea of the "matchplay against the course". The idea of there being no reward for better golf simply doesn't work in any handicap game. You play the game by the stipulated rules, so the better golfer is the one that wins according the rules laid out. if you don't like the idea of the bogey golf game, or the countback method then there's little to be done about it if you entered on those rules.

Scratch medal is probably the only format where the better golfer always wins ;)

Didn't say anywhere I didn't like it, was merely asking the question to improve my knowledge

I actually quite enjoyed it and think I will try and play the course more often in other formats rather than worrying about the overall score.

You score each hole +1(net birdie), 0 (net par) or -1 (anything else).
Our winner yesterday was +5, lots of minus numbers of the leaderboard.

Enlighten the foreigner, please. What is a bogey comp?
At my club the men have bogey comps, and the ladies call exactly the same thing a "par" competion. No idea why they use a different name for it. Anyone else seen that, or able to explain it?

I just looked it up on the official German rules site. We indeed do have this kind of comp (even though I never encountered it and I don't think it is played at our club), in German it is called "Zählspiel gegen Par" which literally translates to "stroke play against par".

From the description, I am with the ladies at your club ... par competition sounds like a more sensible name for it than bogey comp. Maybe it's female logic :D

The rules mention both Bogey and Par competitions as the same thing.

If you were as ancient as I am you'd know that, originally, a bogey was the name for a par. Later on the Americans, who have a long tradition of mangling the English language, decided to call a bogey a par & a one over a bogey. Somewhere along the line we started to do the same thing. Originally, Colonel Bogey was a mythical golfer, so steady a player that he scored par on every hole.
