Bogey Comp's and Handicaps

Its like saying that someone who plays off scratch for instance (to make things easier), could score 36 points but still shoot an 80 simply by having a nightmare hole(s) - so does this mean that Stableford is also a silly format?

Stableford isn't silly. A round with exactly the same hole scores in stableford or medal would result in the same handicap adjustment.

A hypothetical example involving a scratch golfer and to make it easy a course of only par 4's. He plays a competition where css = par.

Scores :-
4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4
4 4 3 3 3 3 6 6 6

If it's a medal, he's +2 and goes up 0.1
If it's stableford, he scores 34pts and goes up 0.1
If it's bogey, he wins 1 up and gets cut 0.1

All with exactly the same scores.

Nobody will convince me that the above is sensible. Sorry.

I think you might want to re-read that.

If it's a medal he's +8 which for handicapping gets adjusted to +2, and he still goes up 0.1.

Hmmm, same as stableford...

Mmmh.. yes - shouldn't really mix a lunchtime drink with counting.
The point I was trying to make again is that medal, stableford and bogey are 3 different animals. With a bogey you stand on any tee and you know exactly the score you need to halve or win the hole - strokeplay or stableford don't come into it. As was pointed out by an earlier poster, it's like matchplay against a scratch player who you already know is going to par every hole.

One thing is sure - you will still remain to be convinced. Just enter the next bogey comp and don't worry about it - what is going to happen will happen.

Will I be back in favour if I tell you we had an away day at Beedles Lake recently and thoroughly enjoyed it?

You should always write down your gross score.
From which your medal/stableford/Bogey competition score will be calculated along with your handicap adjustment.

In fact, all you have to do is write down your gross score & total. You can leave the rest to the handicap secretary/howdidIdo computer to calculate.

You don't have to play in it then?

Bogey is match play against the course. It has zip to do with strokeplay.

It's a strokeplay competition which masquerades as a matchplay, but only against the course, therefore handicaps come into it.

True, but the exact same hole scores in medal and stableford will result in the same handicap alteration.
Saying that a score that would result in 0.1 back could be a cut in bogey is what I can't get my head around.

I'm not the worrying sort, plus it's the golf I enjoy so will still enter everything :)

You were never out of favour. :)
I apologise if it read like I was getting annoyed at you. I just like to understand things and I appreciate your efforts in trying.

I'm glad you enjoyed the day at Beedles. The greens are starting to get better and should hopefully be very good in a couple of months as we have an iron on order and a new maintenance regime to follow.

Give me a shout if you fancy another game there sometime. :)
