I had no idea what 'blob' even meant before I joined this forum, but a lot of people state their score as...

x points with y blobs.

What does this really mean?
Is there a hidden 'between the lines' connotation to stating the number of blobs?

All I can think of is either.....

I had 36 points with 2 blobs so it should have been 40pts.
or
I had 36 points with 2 blobs so I'd have been screwed if it was a medal.

Or maybe there's another reason behind it?

It doesn't bother me so this isn't a rant, but I just don't understand it.

Help me out forum!

I think it's a statement that refers to the fact that the score could have been even better.. "I had 40 points with a blob" actually means "I could have shot 42/43 points"..

Just a statement that there score could have been better

Just ignore it. In most cases blobs are a normal part of your average golfers round. For some reason everyone expects on a good day they'll complete 18 holes without a lapse or mishap. There is in fact a Very high likelihood there will be at least one in there in every round for the vast majority of club golfers. They are only really costly at cat 1 level or better where it really is a card wrecker and you genuinely expect them to be a rarity.

For me (and I'm sure a lot of other people) a blob is a non-scoring hole in stableford. 3 blobs = 3 non-scoring holes

For me a 'Blob' is a non scoring hole, when playing stableford, so last year in stableford I'd be on at least 7 or 8 blobs per round

Sorry, I didn't mean I don't know what a blob is, just that I don't understand the relevance of it to a score.

After all, they are an inevitability of the handicap golfer.

I think I am playing with you next Sunday in the E Mids qualifier, so I can guarantee you will have first hand real life experience of someone having a lot of blobs. A lot. And if there is a blob off then I'm pretty confident of winning that one;)

I hate the talk of blobs.
To me its a messed up hole and generally one blob in a medal is the end of the round.
Another thing is people in the bar talk about 36 points 2 blobs and 4 1 pointers, whats
that all about.

It just means the fella in question didn't play a full round :)

It's the language of the weekend warrior (whoops), the chomper, to borrow a phrase from our erstwhile fellow forumer........that and 'that's a 6 nett 4' :o

Oh that's 4 for 4 :o

:D

OP you might be over thinking it:

Its just a conversational sound bite that its hoped illustrates a rate of points on the scoring holes or even just the levels of under/over performance

i.e it wasn't 18 net par's that gave me 36 points today

Whilst I am fairly sure we will have a good time regardless of the scores produced in our group, what I am not so sure of (and this is by no means a slight on your golf - just an ott example) is that if you slice one oob, reload and sky it 100yds, then fat 2 shots to get to the green, need 2 chips to get it on then 3 putt, is that I will be thinking "wow, that could so easily have been 2 points" as I write a dash on the scorecard. ;)

I hope there's not too much of that, your out in the 1st group  Shall I book overnight accommodation

Overnight accommodation only required after the copious amounts of celebratory beverages consumed following your 43pts with 3 blobs. ;)

Being serious for once if I do hear people say they scored x with say 4 blobs I just automatically think they are just giving themselves a bit of side really. To me it's as if they are saying I scored x, but it could have been y if it wasn't for those pesky kids. Would of, could of should of makes no difference to me, you scored x and that's that.

It's not as if people say the opposite such as 'I scored 37 points but one of those was a flukey eagle put that I could never do again in a 100 tries, and one was a birdie where I thinned a 8 iron horribly that never got above 2 foot off the ground but ended up 18 inches from the hole' . Take the good with the bad I say.

But hey, the fact I score more blobs than the average bear may influence my thinking so I never really mention them.;)
