Bit of a Mad one for you Guys

Was chatting to my Father earlier and we were on about the price of new Golf Balls and other Golf Gear and he told me about an incident when he played with one of his pals in the 70's.. They were Teeing off on a par 4 with a big pond directly in front of the Tee, My Dad was using an Ace Penfold ball and his pal was using one of those old one piece Balls, my father went first and smacked one up the middle then his pal Drove off.His ball cracked in half. Half went into the pond and half landed just beyond the pond in the fairway. His pal insisted that he didnt have to hit another one because the half in the Fairway was the larger half so he was entitled to a free drop.What do you make of that??
