bike crash

Sad crash, and best wishes to her, but that's racing for you. The course is fine, it was just an accident.
These are pro riders, not idiots. They are used to riding down mountains, with shear drops if you get it wrong, or riding on wet cobble stones, which are slippy as. You can't wrap everyone in cotton wool, or it won't be sport.

Yes, I agree.

Here's 2 thoughts ... The first is that Calamity Jane was dreaming and she's free wheeling down a hill with the streamers on her handle bars fluttering about pretending that she's ringing her bell on holiday!

or

The Olympian cyclist is pushing it, she's taking it to the edge both in speed and the line and she's thinking she's in a race!

Either way the end result was the same and all because there was an error of judgement, she's made a mistake or just switched off! Tough cookies that she's been poleaxed, play stupid or play hard and those can be the breaks, bang take that.

Horrible crash to watch. Was the circuit dangerous, or was she travelling too fast for the bend in question? Slower riders didn't crash but finished the course. Even the safest circuit can have crashes if people travel too fast.

It wasn't a speed trial, it was who could get to the finish line first. Error of judgement on a tough, uncompromising course.

In that situation they are one and the same, sure its a very difficult descent with the road starting to get greasy and it was pilot error but that tall sharp kerb should not have been there or have been padded off

Sets a bad precedent though. The responsibility should always rest with the riders. They knew it was an iffy corner, as the blokes crashed at the same one. Ride slower, or take the risk. Padding the curb, putting in straw bales, barriers, etc just isn't road cycling. That course was no worse than some of the classics, or the giro or the TdF.

Was watching live also and it looked bad at the time, now I have seen a replay on FB and it was bad.

The real shock was seeing how she was treated at the time,no-one went near her for 2 minutes and she never moved once although you could see she was breathing heavy.

A spectator was filming and started to walk closer to the girl and was told to stand back, totally shocked really it could have been worse.

Also watched that video today and wondered what I'd do if I was there. Wouldn't film it but wouldn't be sure if I should even touch her let alone move her. Scary stuff. Also watched the French gymnast who broke his leg on the vault - I have a morbid fascination about such things!

I guess the last thing you need is a multitude crowding around her when there's a few dozen others on bikes coming round the corner at any moment.

In hospital, stable, breathing unaided and communicating but no word as to any injuries.
Saw some of the Men's race and whoever designed that course needs shooting....

Sorry Imurg, I couldn't agree less ............. the course was fine in my humble opinion.

I totally agree with this.
She was going too fast and crashed .................... it really is that simple for me.
If it was a dangerous course, how come no other girl had an accident there?
With a gold medal within reach she was riding to the very edge of her ability. Unfortunately one doesn't know exactly where that edge is until it is crossed, then it's too late.
She was doing everything she could to get that gold medal, but unfortunately paid a very heavy price.
I genuinely wish her a full and speedy recovery.
Dangerous course ...................... nah, not in a million years.

I'd be interested in what other "bikers" have to say....

now, don't get me wrong, the crash is horrific and I hope she's ok but in my humble opinion she went into the corner too fast and didn't have the "talent" to complete the corner at that speed. Believe me I do not say that flippantly, if she'd had the ability/trust in her bike and tyres she may have been able to lean the bike over and make the turn.

When you watch the crash she started fine and then suddenly sat up. That was her error, she had zero chance of making it from that point onwards. If she'd fully committed to the turn she might have made it.

Anyone who follows any kind of biking (motor or pedal) will have seen similar things happen .... A rider sits up mid corner and they career off into the gravel trap at speed.

Saw a photo today that showed that he was already up and about and walking with the aid of a frame. I guess he's had successful surgery but it's incredible after such a bad break that he can already start putting some weight on it.

only just seen the clip and TBH its no worse than Ive seen many times and even been involved in. At least she didn't have 5 other riders pile into her while she was down as happened to me when i raced.worst was In a stage race in Italy, descending a mountain and a few of us hit a patch of diesel while doing 50 MPH plus, broke my collar bone, wrist, 2 ribs and had a lump of flesh ripped out of my cheek by one of the other riders chain rings, not to mention a fair bit of skin off my hips, bum and legs.

only real damage was i lost my bottle for descents at full speed.

You're a dark horse Patrick 👍🏼
Jane taking out other cyclists (ones that can ride a bike!) would've been an absolute crime. Thank crikey that it was only her sorry backside and nobody else's 👊🏼
