anyone see the ladies bike race today ,the leader had a crash on the descent ,it looked really really nasty ,she came down on her head and she never moved once she had landed.
god i hope she is ok ,she looked like she could be dead it was that bad.

Wasn't overly impressed with the course, some serious injuries to top male riders yesterday and then this today. No need to make it that dangerous where it no longer becomes a test of who is the best technical descender.

It sure was a big one.
I thought she landed with her back on the edge of the kerb and immediately feared that she may have broken her back!
I guess we won't hear too much until the morning.
I really do wish her well.

In hospital, stable, breathing unaided and communicating but no word as to any injuries.
Saw some of the Men's race and whoever designed that course needs shooting....

Just seen on Twitter that the girl is in intensive care with "severe concussion and three small fractures in her back". Fingers crossed she makes a full recovery.

Oh dear. I watched the race and it really was a horrible crash :(

\i have only seen a still image and I am not keene to see the video based on that. Just looked away at the highlights. It sounds like she got a fairly lucky escape from what I imagine could have happened.

Both bike races had some bad crashes on that stretch. Does anyone know where the TT is going? And the triathlon races? Are they using that bit as well?
A lot of hay can possibly make it a little saver, but people will think about risking to much.

Definitely some overlap between the road race route and the TT but I think they ride the earlier hills not the finishing ones from the road race

Hindsight is 20/20 but surely they inspect the roads beforehand and can put barriers/padding on areas that are dangerous ie. 18" high curbs on the outside of tight corners on a steep descent.

I'm presuming that this Olympian spent hours and hours perfecting and rehearsing that route -

Perfect conditions for it and shes got no excuse, when you are free wheeling and not concentrating you get what you deserve! No doubt that there'll be some softies in her camp giving her some sympathy but the vast majority (if they watched it) will just say yep that was stupid/self inflicted, bang goes a medal from her 👊🏼

Very classy - don't worry about a young lady lying in hospital with very serious injuries , you keep it real

Perfect conditions? It was starting to rain. And no they don't spend hours rehearsing the route as it is public roads so surprisingly enough they do not get chance to hurtle down hill at fast speeds with traffic coming the other way.

If you are just stupidly ignorant then try and engage your brain before typing. If you are deliberately being a troll in a situation where several people, including the commentators, thought she may have been very seriously injured or even worse live on TV then grow up moron.

Sad crash, and best wishes to her, but that's racing for you. The course is fine, it was just an accident.
These are pro riders, not idiots. They are used to riding down mountains, with shear drops if you get it wrong, or riding on wet cobble stones, which are slippy as. You can't wrap everyone in cotton wool, or it won't be sport.

Clueless

I was watching it live and like many others was really shocked by her fall and feared she might well have not survived the impact. I think if someone like Chris Boardman suggests the descent isn't "technical" but rather "dangerous" them some questions have to be asked. In pursuit of an olympic gold athletes will push the limits but the organisers need to ensure there are necessary safety precautions in place.

I did wonder (later when we knew she was alive!) whether she slammed her front brake on when the slide started and hence flew over the handlebars?
