• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Best player you’ve played with

Early 2000's and was going out with Maureen Madill who was working on 5 live, Curtis Cup and Welsh Girls coach.
Played at Patshull Park, Carden Park and Aberdovey.
I was off 7 at the time, played off the yellows together with no shots . I was longer off the tee but her course management and short game was emmense . Chips and bunker play was pretty much always a tap in/concession.

Had an absolute wealth of golf stories as well and got me inside the ropes on final practice day at Muirfield 2002, where I had a chat with Tom Watson as he waited on a par 3 .
Happy days 😀

Alas it wasn't to be and got dumped in early summer 2003😪 😅
Occasionally bump into each other as she has friends in and around Shropshire.
Lovely lady and family . Her sister Patricia was the Times golf correspodent with her husband Dai Davies the Guardian's , we shared a love of Crans -Sur -Sierre as favourite golf course along with Valias reds 😀

Probably for the best...Maureen Upsidedown doesn't flow as a name... 😋

I played with a friend who played in a few European Tour events and he shot a “course record” 64 like it was nothing. He said he shot 64 the day before as well.

It’s a fairly fiddly golf course and he dismantled it with driver.

An old mate of mine from back in the day.
A young American named Orrin Vincent III, what a player he was.
He stayed at my dad's place for a season so that he could play on the European Tour in 1992.
Qualified for the '92 Open at Muirfield, made the cut and finished T55th.
Many didn't make that cut, including among others, Seve, Monty, Torrance, Couples and so on.
He was a skinny lad who hit the ball absolute miles, but what really stood out was his ability to get out of real trouble every single time.
Why chip out sideways when you have the ability to find a 2ft square window of opportunity high up in the treetops?
He was just extraordinary.

Don't think I've ever played with anyone better than scratch, and even then only a couple of times.
Never played with anyone famous either.
I care more about their company then their handicap, played with plenty of plus handicap players I never wish to play with again, thought they were the bees knees but most could not break par away from their home course, so never going to make it as a pro.

I have a couple of mates who are at/around 1. Either or both of them might have been below scratch at some point (not sure what their lowest is) but not when I've played with them.

Ping “play your Best” final about 13 years ago.
Ryder cup Weekend, ( Miracle at Medina) @MikeH was in charge of the drinks , think the expense account got severely hammered .

Played 3 holes with Lee, proper gent,
Playing over a lake on a par 3, I was aiming over the water, he asked why and I said, my slice will bring it in, he said a draw will be a safer bet,

“ I can’t hit a draw”

“Ok set up to the ball, right leg back 6 inches, bring your shoulders to your right leg, hit the ball”

Hit a lovely soft draw that ended about 8 feet from the flag

“That’ll be £50 please”

Oh how we laughed

I have never, ever been able to replicate that shot

Great weekend, great Ryder Cup result and great memories
Lee played our course a couple of years ago. Missed a short one on 18 for a 59.

In 2006 I met a Swedish girl on holiday. Her looks were stereotypically scandinavian - tall, blonde, blue eyes - she looked a lot like Elin Nordegren, and we had a lot of fun. A few months later, I had a dream that I was still seeing this girl, and it turned out she was Elin's twin sister, so I got to know Tiger Woods and played a few rounds with him. He was very generous with his time. It was before all the stories came out so there was no inappropriate behaviour from him when waitresses served us. It wasn't that type of dream anyway.

It's the first time this has popped into my head for almost 20 years. It's amazing the crap that is locked away in my brain!

Lock the thread.

Edit - I’ve re-read it and realised it was a dream.

Continue.

You might have your dates mixed up, Lee Westwood was in the European Team at Medinah that weekend.
