The par 3 5th at Holyte gc in Kent not a well known course but a hidden gem, played from a elevated tee with trees lined close each side framing a view that opens up to a view of a steep sloping bank left of the green, if you hit it right the ball will run away down the bank.
Options of trying to hit the steep bank and let the ball roll down to the green or hit a accurate shot to the green, also 3 tees for the next hole are above and behind the green which helps the overall look at the hole. This hole always excites me every time I play it and is in 30 odd years of playing is the best par 3 I’ve played,it’s my favorite hole.

Hard enough to pick a best course, let alone a best hole:LOL: Far to many to choose from.

Went for Beau Desert Golf Club 9th hole. Par 4 of approx. 250-260yards iirc.

So my tick list went :-

Short driveable par 4, makes you believe you can hole out or even the easy eagle(never done), Small sloping green, Elevation changes, Hard to par, Hard to eagle/birdie, No easy layup to attack hole or see pin from, hard up/down from anywhere near the green, Nice looking on the eye, nice views over surrounding countryside

Its one of the best short par 4 I have played and often walk off with a bogey or more:D

8th at Baildon. As a guest you'd probably just play it, enjoy the views, putt out and walk to the 9th but as a member I grew to love it as over the year you see it all change so much season to season. Elevated tee, dog leg left to right, couple of bunkers to the right of the green. You have to hit the fairway or you're in the gorse. 2nd shot should be a shot into the green if you've hit the right place on the fairway. Really nice green too but bunkers right, slope to the left and if you're too long you will be in the rough. Par is a great score. Views are stunning and the weather can change everytime you play it.

The 11th at Hassocks (now sadly being reduced from 18 to 9) was always a challenge ... driving over a lake to a sharp right turn and then a shot across another lake to a green guarded by bunkers. Used to be a member there and only parred it once.

Jesus, I'd have to bring scuba gear and a handful of lost & found balls if I was playing that!

Love 15 at Seahouses but fond memory of 14 at there too. Howling winds coming off and some sea ramblers stopped to watch my shot just ahead of the tee. I asked them to move back to their confusion as I aimed right out at sea. i belted a hybrid right out and the wind blew it back in onto the green. I was unsurprisingly the only one to hit the green that day. Amazingly I had a rubbish round but I just had that feeling I was gonna hit a great shot.

Is that the hole called the ”Cove”. Think there’s a piece/ write up in the clubhouse where a golf magazine rates it one of the hardest holes in the world. I hit the green two days running with a 9 iron and parred it both times. Gorgeous hole. The other hole that is over the water all the way is a lovely hole as well.

16th (Cluniemore) at Pitlochry. Fearsome (for me) 180yd downhill par3. Carry over deep rough and with deep rough short left and right of green - with the forest and plummeting out of bounds tight all the way down the right and behind the green...

Over the years I'd have to say the 14th at Dewsbury, elevated tee drops down onto a tiered fairway, then down a steep hill to the green. It's a par 4, but if you catch your drive you can almost make the green. If you don't get close to the green, then you have a downhill lie with maybe an 8 iron to a green protected by two bunkers, and a steep slope off thge back of the green - it's a really tough shot. Sometimes better to play to the edge of the top tier of the fairway with a 5 iron, then hit maybe a 7 iron down onto the green.
It's a great hole.

Great views over West Yorkshire off the tee too. This was the first time the boy played it about 18 months back, you can see the tier on the fairway, and the green tucked down in the trees in the bottom left.

Apologies for the effects.

Your lad's got a great looking swing (y)

He's grown a bit since that vid was filmed and his swing improved quite a bit.

Hoping to take him for at least 9 holes at the weekend as he turns 10 on Sunday so a bit of a birthday treat for him.

Be interesting to see how his ability develops over the next few years.

The big jump will come when he's 13-15 and starts shooting up. I guy I used to play with started bringing his son out to join the Sunday roll up when he was 12. He had a good looking swing and I enjoyed playing with him, but he couldn't really hit the ball far enough to play off the whites (bit like many of the seniors I guess). Anyway, by 15 he was a Cat 1 golfer.

Hope your boy keeps it up!

Jamie's best drive is about 200 yards at the moment but a more realistic distance is 170 ish, 7 iron goes about 120 to 130.

Distance won't be an issue for him, if he can develop a short game, then he'll be able to get well into single figures.

Yes that’s a great hole played it many times with my brother ( Golfmmad) who used to be a member there, don’t think I ever parred it. Sadly it’s closed now which is a real pity as I always enjoyed playing there.

Yes, it was a shame ... but as is any closure or “18 to 9“ reduction. The 17th was an interesting par 3 too, with the green hidden by the reeds growing in the lake in front.

15 is the cove. 10 over the water from the up hill tee always gets me!

I nearly always played that hole well, harder than the par 3 10th which I always struggled to par, a good friendly club with a varied mixture of holes.

It was going to a 9 hole which I assume you would play twice from different tees but ended up closing completely, shame as I thought it was just right for a good test for my level.

I played a senior open there with my brother and came away with a prize also I had one of my best ever rounds there around 82 I think.

Yes, the 10th was tricky, with several bunkers before the green, but I didn’t find it interesting. You did better than me ... my best was 95. Mind you, I had a 9 on the 16th, so it should have been 91 ?
