Best course played & why?

Have never worried what a car park looks like, if the course is good is top of my list, IMO Hunstaton is fantastic place to play.

Westwood in Leek. I was there for 8 years and left, for three, but the lure of the place was too strong and I'm bluddy back to suffer the hell of, well the entire course. Every hole is a card wrecker. Not for nothing is is one of the county stars playing here. It's hell but if you manage a score you've done very well. Also top county comps are held here.
Shall I organise a meet? Only my cousin has turned up and smashed it when I've organised anything. Otherwise I've sneaked in with a win, you have to know the course.
Any takers?
Just had a look on Google Earth.
Course looks good.
Car park is a long walk from the clubhouse. I'm not sure I could cope with this inconvenience. 🤪

I've also looked at green fee and society prices. This might persuade me to give it a go.

@Crazyface organise it and they will come.

I think that's how the quote goes 🤣

I've just seen it on my spreadsheet of courses played, or I'd have sworn I've never been there!😉

Looking at the website, I think there was a GolfMagic day there about 30 something years ago! 🤣 (Up some steps behind the proshop to the first tee?)

But, as I said before, no wrong answers in a thread like this, personal preferences are personal!

There was !!!! I think I won it.

Back to the OP, Shiskine for me 100% on all accounts…a totally memorable and enjoyable experience

I’d love to play Shiskine.
As for hidden gem types, one of my favourites has always been Elie. Probably not even in the hidden gem bracket but worth a mention.
Horrid when the wind and rain come in off the sea but on a nice day absolutely stunning. Played it again in the summer there, 4th time in total, weather was glorious, golf was rank rotten and still probably the most enjoyable few hours I’ve had on a course.

Tricky question that. Within the UK it's got to be Purdis Heath, Ipswich. Massively underrated course with some very interesting holes and always in top top condition. Southerness also presents unbelievable value if playing with a member, £25 on Saturday morning!

Abroad it's got to either be Victoria in the Algarve, which is now part of the Els Club so was fortunate to play it before or Torrquebrada in Spain is one of the most fun courses I have ever played.

Quick question, slightly off topic: how does Rushmere stack up with Purdis heath? I am eyeing up a Ipswich area tour next year, and Rushmere would be more on budget for our group.

Rushmere is a decent course, however it's still around £60odd for a course on public heathland so if you don't mind a fair amount of dog walkers it's worth a try also worth noting the layout is the original site of Ipswich Golf Club before they actually moved to Purdis! If you're heading to the area I'd definitely recommend Thorpeness. Fynn Valley is another interesting course in Ipswich too. But if you can stretch to it Purdis is well worth a visit, along with Woodbridge and Aldeburgh! If you want any help or further recommendations for the area just drop me a message 😊

Played most courses in Suffolk, loved Purdis.....mate was a member so played often on Guest day, also played Rushmere but can not recall it as well, so maybe not that impressive to me.

Think I played that day. We were living on the edge of south Manchester back then. From what I remember, the course was a mix of long established holes and some, at that time, relatively new holes. I dare say spotting the difference between the nines would be a lot harder now.

I remember water coming into play quite a bit, or it did for me 🥴 :ROFLMAO:

The team working for course architect Gil Hanse surveyed people to find out what made a golf course enjoyable. This was in the context of building a new course in Florida, The Park West Palm Beach.

This is what they came up with:
  • Width and scale with bold and memorable features
  • Half-par holes
  • Short grass and contouring around the greens
  • Variety
  • Greens with hole locations of varying difficulty
  • The opportunity to use a wide range of shots approaching and around the green
  • A friendly start and gettable finish
  • Stellar par 3s
  • A great walk
  • No lost golf balls
  • Frequent and relevant use of angles to define the preferred shot both off the tee and into the green
They then set out to build The Park as a fun golf course. They succeeded, it's top of my list for enjoyable golf. Fun doesn't mean easy: it's over 7000 yards from the back tees and was testing enough to challenge the pros when it hosted "the match" in 2024 which was won by McIlroy.

Other courses on my fun list are Kapalua, Loch Lomond, El Saler and The Addington (since tree removal project it is really ticking all the boxes above).

I've played some big name links courses that have already been mentioned, e.g. RSG, Birkdale. They are stunning, but it's so easy to lose golf balls on these courses, especially off the tee, and I think that reduces the enjoyment factor.

If you're interested in the design philosophy around fun golf at The Park, there's a review here: https://www.thefriedegg.com/articles/the-park-west-palm-beach-review
