I wanted to ask about how much difference the ball can make to side spin on your shots. I understand that the "better" balls spin more which helps the balls stop on the green with a well struck shot.

But do they spin more in general? i.e. will they make a fade/draw/slice/hook materially worse than with a "worse" ball?

Every now and again, I'll splash out on a Pro-V1 or equivalent but I wondered if their higher spin rate actually worked against a higher handicapper like myself?

Yes, they will, which is why there is still a market for less spinny balls. What you lose on the greens, you gain by finding fairways.

I don't use "proper" balls until it gets to the point where nothing stops on the greens. Even then, depending on the course, I might still use a distance ball.

I learned the lesson quite soon that a spin ball will make wayward shots more wayward. Everyone has their own opinion but I happily play in the summer with distance balls and whip out a ProV or Z-star for short holes or par 3s.

I use pro v1 and find that they emphisise the spin on miss hits, I tried the tm burner tp balls last year, and they were great, off the tee they didnt go as badly on miss hits and they stop pretty quick for a medium price ball. If I didnt have 2 dozen pro v's left, I'd go buy some now! lol
I also tried the hx hot bite ones, as I found one yesterday, was impressed with them too for not being a premium ball.
