Hi,

Just a quick question, I am suffering from dreadfull backspin with 9 iron inwards and i am not talking 2/3 foot back spin i mean 15ft or more backspin is there a way to stop this or is it just down to a bad swing? Its not being as bad recently as the greens are not being cut as short.

Any idea's?

Cheers
Brendan

I would take a club more and punch the ball in or if you have to go over anything just try and hit the ball past the flag and allow for the spin. Spin isnt caused by a bad swing its caused by good contact on the ball so you must be hitting the ball pretty well to be getting that much spin.

what type of ball do you play? you may want to look at something a little harder.

ProV! Problem here is I hate putting with a hard ball, awful feeling and sound.

I just get the feeling that maybe im chopping down on the ball.
Its probably one for the Pro but i just thought I would ask on here.

Its down to your swing speed I'm afraid and possibly the ball position.
The harder you hit it, the faster it spins, the more it spins back.
Hit a gentle 8 maybe down the shaft a bit and if its way back in your stance, move it more towards the middle of your stance :)

Am I right in saying that backspin causes the Ball to rise high in the air?

Bet it gets some great comments from your mates though. The simple answer is to aim further back on the green and just zip it back next to the cup! :DI agree that a firmer strike will put more spin on so hit it easier and move it forward a fraction. Otherwise shop around for a less reactionary ball (Srixon Z star or TP red?)

:)

What I'd give! :D

I tried landing the ball just short on 3 holes last Sunday and got instant plugged-ball syndrome. If I knew the ball was coming back, I'd hit a club more!!!

Getting serious.....try a worse ball.....

Brendan

Does this happen every time you use a 9 iron or less into every green on every course you play, or is it something that happens only occasionally, or on one or more particular holes on one course?

I have a similar problem, but the other way round.

On the odd occasion that I hit a green, the ball shoots forward on landing and often runs through the green.

Yeh, me too! :)

I suspect he's hitting it properly, unlike me.... :(

I have changed to a TP Black as I found Titleist Pro V & Vx spin to much. Great for a few weeks but gets tirsome after a few weeks of chipping back onto greens you have already been on.

You could always look for a golf course with USGA greens, I find the ball doesn't spin as much on these greens. That may just be me though.

Watch Darren Clarke's punch shot with an abbreviated follow through for control.

The spin is probably partly due to the softish greens this time of year, which spin more. Greens in the US always spin more than here for that reason. Soon, that will move along to plugged balls.

ProV1 is a pretty spinny ball. The x is less spinny.

I agree with SharkAttack, i don't think USGA spec greens spin as much because they are firmer all year round.
I'm lucky enough to get regular invites to play in a local pro-am and the course they always use has USGA greens, i don't spin it anywhere near as much as my home courses soft greens.
I use PRO V1 ball also as i enjoy the slightly softer feel around and on the greens. Although i have to say that each incarnation of the PRO V seems to get harder and harder!!

Hi,
Where do u play in Ireland Brendan, a lot of the older courses that dont have sand based greens will result in a lot more spin on my course that has sand based greens the ball just hops and stops but when i go to other courses i do get a lot of back spin so u just have to take account of it when you are selecting your club rather that change your swing.
Mike

Just swing easy. On Saturday I went after a pw on our 9th, and span it back 20 odd feet. On Sunday I hit the same pw, but swung easy, and it ended up in exactly the same spot, with drop and stop. Saturdays was a heck of a lot of effort for no real gain.

Brendan - forgive me for being a tad inquisitive, but if you are spinning the ball back 15 feet with 9-iron, pitching wedge and sand wedge, what is your current handicap?

I think that Brendan is quietly chuckling at some of the serious replies. I did try to "politely" draw him out yesterday but his silence is golden.

Maybe he is another good fisherman, or one established member under another handle. Maybe he carefully cast the bait and sat back waiting for the takers? One or two of the usual know it alls took the bait as did some who genuinely wanted to help.
