Augusta - would you break 100?

Only one way to settle this perennial question. Mike H needs to get on the phone quickly and arrange for say 50 lucky forummers to play the course off the back tees the day after the Masters finishes with the final day tees and pins, all expenses paid. It is necessary for this important golf issue to be decided once and for all using regular golfers like us (not celebs or golf journos). As It was my idea I bags first tee time.

Why not go off after the last group on Sunday, then you'd have the crowds and 50 squillion tv viewers watching you as well.

You're right as usual Bob. This needs to be done properly and scientifically under true tournament conditions. We also need to make it meaningful. How about lowest gross gets a green jacket, a locker in the Champions locker room and a lifetime invitation to come back every year. That would replicate the nerves for that final putt.

No prize money though. I don't want to lose my Amateur Status as I'm booked in for the following week's stableford.

Guy I know played it.Was off 8 and shot 84.Said it wasn't tough till he got to the greens but then again he wasn't off the back pegs.

I would fancy my chances if I was striking the ball well. A guy from our club who is late 50s and not very long, playing off 7, shot 80 2 years ago on his first visit just before the Masters (stands up and everything). Jammy git played the same time last year. Like mentioned, the greens are the ussue, but he is quite used to playing on quick ones, which helped. Someone else I know played it off about 9 and coped pretty well and played near handicap. Remember, breaking a 100 is almost a double bogey per hole!I reckon it would be possible if you play cautiously but you get in real trouble if you try and attack it - on second thoughts, I might struggle!

Depends on how it's set up...championship sunday?....not a hope for anyone with a 10 or more handicap...under 10 would have to be one their A game.It's 7500 yards long with the slopiest fastest greens with lots of water!

We'd all struggle on the greens without a doubt, not just because of their pace but also the slopes. How many of us have to allow 25feet of break at our home courses??

On the sky preview show last night they showed an example putt of over 60 feet that would start nearly 5 foot above the pin with 25 feet of break!!!

I think that if I was bang on my game, as good as it could be, and played sensibly with a good slice of luck, I could get close to 80. But if i wasn't out then 100 would be a push.

Can I put my name forward as the high handicap control for this very worthy experiment. Even being the one to prove how high a score you can get would be worth it to play the course.

Didn't Paul O'Hagen or someone else from GM play it the other year and walked off after about 14 to get the flight home but were doing reasonably well and looked like cracking 100 with ease

Still can't believe he walked off, lot's of flights, probably only one chance to play Augusta. I think he was only about 10ish over at the time wasn't he ?

Wouldn't break 100 at the moment. Not a chance. No way no how. However I'm prepared to give it a go and prove myself wrong. There seem to be a few friends or friends of friends who have played it. Maybe it isn't so hard to get a game. Next venue for a GM meet?

Ever the optimist - can't imagine that you should be on a course that you don't believe that you can't do better than 14 worse than your handicap. Pro's score similar at Augusta as othet top venues, it just has that aura of being rock hard, which is not upheld from the stories I have heard - very tough overall yes, stupid tough on the greens, especially if you are not used to slick undulating surfaces (I love them), but tee to green not all that difficult apart from length.

But, now you have triggered the Cooden nightmare, I will have to start therapy again - I am targetting significant improvement this year and won't be taking more than 14 balls! Augusta looks easy next to Cooden!
