Our local pro went to watch the Masters a few years ago and came back with the opinion that even if it was a Par 3 course most club golfers would struggle to break 100 - is this a tall tale or near the truth?

Reckon it could be true. Lots of water and putting would be like putting on glass. Too many shots would just miss the hole and run off into trouble. Id guess you'd need to be a single figure to have a real chance of beating a ton.

Im trying to play medinah next month (home of ryder cup 2012) so if im lucky enough to get on ill report back with my score there. ;)

Your average everyday 18 handicapper wouldn't break 100.
If I took my A game I might - just.
If I took today's game I'd be lucky to break 150!

I think it is a half truth. single figure golfers would break it ok, higher guys would struggle more.
Rorys coach played there last year and hit 78, I dont think Michael would be tour length off the tee but 78 is a good score. One of our amateurs played it in '86 and '87 and shot 78's. He did hit a long ball too so shows that it all comes down to the greens, putting and their approaches.
Id love to think that without the crowds Id break 90.

My pro who teaches me said a friend of his played it and shot 95. Not sure what his H/C was but apparentley he was a pretty good golfer. He said the the fairway and tee shots were not that hard but the greens could leave you some near impossible putts if you got in the wrong spot.

I reckon I could shoot below 100. I enjoy fast greens, I think it's about good course management rather than length.

Yes Homer, I remember that - struggled to believe it then!

I think we would all do better than expected as it is relatively open off the tee and there is little rough - just the pine straw under the trees. I always believe fast true greens are easier to putt on than slow bobblers so reckon I could break 80... :o

Compared to how they set up the US Open courses it would be far easier for an amateur at Augusta.
It is only the speed of the greens that make it so hard, think many of us could do level 5's ok for 90.

My old man has played it twice and shot 78 both times, off a 6 handicap. He played the first time straight after Norman shot that 78 in the final round and tried to claim he was as good as Greg! They didnt play the tees the pros play though which are a hell of a lot tougher.

I know that week after the US open they do this thing where a few good celebrity golfers go and play the US open course and try to break 100. The first year they did it a Bethpage Black I think only 2 of them broke 100. Tony Romo, the NFL quarterback, who plays off plus 2 or something shot an 84 and Justin Timberlake whos a 6, shot 99 I think....

I played at Bethpage Black last year with a guy who was off +1 and we played off the back tees in the morning and I shot 78 and he shot a 71. In the afternoon he played again and played from the US open tees, they didnt even have tee markers there but he just played from the tee boxes anyway and shot an 88!! So yeah they set those courses up a lot tougher for the pros....

Augusta obviously isnt anywhere near as penal as a US open course off the tee, but around the greens I think it would be ridicuously difficult.

Off the members tees with the course set up for members play I would like to think I could break 80. Off the tournie tees with the greens set up for the Masters I have doubts I could break 100.

If the pins are easy, the weather is perfect and you try and par every hole, a few might. If you play bogey golf ie laying up then more would.

And for those who don't think it's about length, there are 9 par 4s that range between 440yds and 505 yds. Count them on your course.
7435 yds is a slog, especially with the changes in elevation and you'd be looking at between 35 and 45 putts.

Only one way to settle this perennial question. Mike H needs to get on the phone quickly and arrange for say 50 lucky forummers to play the course off the back tees the day after the Masters finishes with the final day tees and pins, all expenses paid. It is necessary for this important golf issue to be decided once and for all using regular golfers like us (not celebs or golf journos). As It was my idea I bags first tee time. :D :D :D
