Athletics - 100 metre false start ruling.

I think two false starts would be better, even at this level nerves must play a factor, one wrong move and it is all over?
I can not agree "one" is right for the sprint events :(

Play by the rules. Ironic really that here we are on a forum for a sport where we take the rules so honestly, that we are complaining about someone being disqualified for breaking the most important one in their sport.

Except....in other sports you can make a mistake on the first tee/first serve/first kick and not lose out instantly, unless it's something crazy and out of order. Sprinters have to be ready, so mistakes will happen.
In U.B's case, surely he could calmly wait and still win?
It's too harsh i.m.o.

I'd like to see a return to a warning before D/Q - a yellow card type system. It only takes a twitch to set a chain reaction from other guys and with nerves and tension so high it is inevitable that it will happen. I think the IOC need to look at it if they are going to lose the best sprinter in the world at the first time of asking

Agree with Dave

On the subject of TV companies calling the shots on scheduling, what about when the football goes into extra time, in golf, the play offs, and snooker? All of these mess up scheduling, so a few false starts wouldn't cause too much of a problem surely?

As for the comment on Kelly Holmes, really?
I absolutely love Athletics, and her - and I thought she came back from an ongoing and serious injury, to finally show how great she really was.

Just run the race, and adjust the times accordingly.

I for one used to hate all the false starts, the way forward is to bring back the yellow card, one false start and everyones penalised.
Everyone knows where they stand then, and it would also suit the tv.
Why? Don't they know where they stand now? Yellow card is just the same as the rule just now, it can be your first false start but the second of the race and you are out. Fast starters were always at a disadvantage with the old rule because someone always intentionally false started, so that everyone sat in there blocks a fraction longer on the second start taking the fast starters advantage away.

The system is fine as it is, it's just like a risk and reward hole in golf, if you take a chance it can go well but it can also go belly up. It just went belly up for Bolt this time.

I cant find anything on the internet but it all comes from what my missus was telling me, she used to run for a club n county etc and always used to say about it, may of been when she was in her army days and doing athletics part time. By sounds of it shes not popular amongst certain areas.

I will have a proper look on the internet later see if I can find something on it.

If you false start you should be DQ'd.. they do have a problem with rocking setting off the alarm tho , mayb slightly less sensitive starting block or a review to see if it was a rock or an attempted start .. hard in the 100m as they are so close to the crowd & the crowd is buzzing with anticipation .. If you try anticipate the gun & you go early , tough your out ..

I didn't see Dwain Chambers complaining - i think it was other people complaining using his case as an example; i think he took it extremely well, and it did look harsh given that it was a back leg twitch, although i understand that unscrupulous sprinters have apparently been known to twich on purpose to get others to false start.

I agree with whoever mentioned dog traps - they use them in Snowboard/Skier Cross with gates opening at the same time - anyone jumping runs straight into an unopened gate !

That's a fair point and could be a way out for the IOC to make some changes without losing face.

I'm sure it will be different for 2012 and not just for the 100 metres, it should be the same for all races using starter blocks.
