What's your take on this?

Personally I think it's a complete farce.
With all the hard work and effort wasted by such sophisticated methods now in use to detect false starting.

Being such a flagship event I'd like to see it back to 3 strikes and you're out.

And they will certainly have to sort something out before 2012.

Absolutely pitiful.
They've lost the biggest draw of the whole games to a farcical decision to DQ a false start.

It'll be all change come the Olympics.

It is ridiculous that one slip up in an aspect of the event where split second timing is essential can cause a DQ. If the fastest man in the world is not competing it devalues the flagship event.

It has to go back to the 3 strikes method for the Olympics. Mind you, how many athletes have suffered at the hands of this rule and yet it takes Bolt to be DQd in a final for anyone to pay any attention.

I thought Lord Seb Coe stated earlier today the ruling will not be changed for the Olympics - find this very hard to believe. They have completely ruined the World Champs in one shot this time round, just a totally illogical ruling, reputedly made at the TV companies request

On the flip side though, with 3 strikes people get risky and try and predict the gun which could save 1 tenth of a sec and maybe the difference between silver and bronze.
How many chances are 'fair'?
'fair' is having everyone on a level playing field, they all know the rules and it's the same for everyone.

I hear what people are saying with potentially the worlds fastest man DQ, but only if he breaks the rules.

Just playing devils avocado :p

Just run the race, and adjust the times accordingly.

This would just take away the exitement, the winner wouldnt celebrate as he wouldnt know if he really won,and then it would become boring.
As has been said, the rule was brought in for tv.
I for one used to hate all the false starts, the way forward is to bring back the yellow card, one false start and everyones penalised.
Everyone knows where they stand then, and it would also suit the tv.
To be honest with Bolt,he lost concentration, the tv cameras are always on him so much longer than the other athletes, obviously because he the biggest draw.
It has become a circus, and Bolt does himself no favours as he plays to the cameras.
He would have won the race by miles even if he was last out the blocks.
However he is a crowd pleaser, and i think he felt he was in such great shape,he had a new world record in him.

Introduce traps like at the dog tracks ;)
It would save any false starts and it might me fun to watch if the athletes push too hard on the door and end up flat on their faces :D :D

Play by the rules. Ironic really that here we are on a forum for a sport where we take the rules so honestly, that we are complaining about someone being disqualified for breaking the most important one in their sport.

To be fair Bolt is an idiot. He was one of the athletes that was pleased with the introduction of the new ruling because his speed comes in the third phase of the race due to his massive stride length and crazy fast leg speed.

His start and drive have never been as good as those of the shorter athletes like Tyson Gay. As a result he should never be false starting. I think he was after a world record which was why he was twitchy. I reckon he will break the WR in the 200m.

As for the rule I have no problem with it. Bringing back the old rule allows people to risk 'jumping the gun', whereas they should react to it.

Keep it . Lets be honest , no-one batted an eyelid when Dwayne Chambers and Christina Ohurugu (sp) were DQ'd as they're not big enough names. If the worlds No1 golfer got disqualified for not signing a correct card , would we ask for the rules to be changed ?

It all adds to the excitement :)

Rules are rules, they all know this when they enter. Johnson said he never false started because you wait for the gun before you run, those who are trying to predict the gun are just basically cheating and hoping they get away with it.

How ever the part of the rule I find silly is that you cannot move once you are set, like Chambers he didnt set off he just moved backwards but then again if thats the rules then he deserved to go.

Dwain Chambers complaining about the rules. Does anyone else consider this ironic seeing how he spent enough years cheating them taking drugs until he got caught.

And as for Ohorugru who "forgot three times" she had to take a drug test ....

it is a bit ironic that he is complaining about the rules but problem is drug cheats get treated in different ways. Speak to anyone who really likes there athletics and they do not like kelly holmes, she was done for drugs yet still was allowed to compete, yet chambers got done and now cannot compete in the olympics even though hes done his time.

The rule exists because too many races were a farce with multiple false starts. Then they went to one false start and everyone was on a warning. This was wrong as those who did not false start first time got dqed after one false start but the original offender would have two chances.

With this rule, everyone knows where they are and they have to stay set. This is the only sensible way to ensure competitors wait for the gun.

If Bolt was DQed it was his mistake. I could understand the big problem if he had not moved and the system had said he had.

He got it wrong and the rule is the right one.

For 100, 200, 100h and 110h I think one false start is ok, it was part of athletics for years and releases a bit of tension in the runners.
IMO it was wrong to DQ on one false start.
Seb Coe was an 800/1500 guy where starts are not critical.
