Interesting..........

Lots of people think they are quick but when you read what they do (PSR etc) it transpires that they are actually quite slow.

Waiting on every shot while the group in front takes 4.5hrs doesn't make you quick. I remember my one and only H4H day at Blackmoor a few years ago, I lost the will to live. Painful doesn't even begin to describe the pace of play that day.

I've played a full 18 holes on an empty course in under 2 hrs before. It's not a race to get round but it is incredible how much time people can waste that is totally avoidable just by applying a bit of common sense

Good thread James

Read, practice swing x2/3, line up, confirm line, confirm again, play stroke. As I said, long routine but it works for me know as I have checked several times and can putt with a bit more confidence.

But on the topic of slow play do you think its quick enough? 2 putts per hole on average. In a 4 ball that adds up if everyone else decides to take that long or even 30 seconds each.

These bits can be done while others are taking their putts, I'm assuming that is what you do?

Please tell me that most of that is done whilst the others are putting.

That doesn't take 45 seconds

This takes 45 seconds
Read
Pause
practice swing x2/3 with a pause between each
line up,
pause
dither
confirm line,
pause
confirm again,
pause
dither
play stroke.

I think everyone should have the oppourtunity to assess the lie, line, select a club, take a practice swing and then take the shot and move on this should take less than a minute.

Life's fast enough I enjoy a relaxing time on the golf course, if I wanted to run around a pitch whacking at a ball at speed I'd play hockey.

45 seconds is a long time to stand over a putt. As is 30 secs?

What is your routine?

I was thinking that also - and tried to count out 45 seconds going through my routine in my head. 25 seconds or so for me.

Also played a mixed foursomes match couple of weeks back that took us 3hrs8mins. And we took it serious. Could have been even quicker as we didn't in general play 'non-player walk forward' and that would probably have taken at least 15mins off. Not difficult to play seriously, not rushed and not slow.

ITS MEEEEEE GUV

Im slow, and love it, wind them up behind, see the steam from their collars rising, then see the duff quick swings, slamming of clubs into the ground, and watch the repeat performance again............. Ya can't beat it :D

Once upon a time, and quite recent really, I'd say I was uber fast. But lately I've found my fitness levels aren't great and I'm often 20yds behind the guys over the last few holes.

My psr is non-existent, and the shot is over in a flash. And I call through as soon as a ball is gone, irrespective of the comments from my partners of, "but they've nowhere to go." - that isn't up to us, that's up to the group in front.

Yep, I'm Spartacus!

I think the European Tour recommends 40 or 45 seconds.

I agree that there is such a thing as "too fast" (I played with one last week!) but it's a lot rarer than Too Slow

Interestingly we usually get round as a four ball in under four hours at my club and about 4 may be 4 and a quarter in a medal so pace of play never seems too bad and yet there can be rounds that you feel you've waited forever and are still under four hours and others where you've kept moving and it seems to take the same amount of time

I'm definitely slow...

...ing down. For me every shot is always the penalty to win the world cup! :D (Like that metaphor?)

Just too many swing thoughts in my head and no practice means I'm re-learning the swing every time I play! :(

I had a short period where I tried to do a Birchy and it worked...... for a couple of shots then it was "fat city"!

Apologies to all I have offended in the past

and to all who I will offend in the future!

I won't lie and say I am fast. I enjoy the walk and dont care how long a round takes in total as long as we dont have long to wait hitting into greens or teeing off.

I much prefer the leisurely pace of a late summers evening with a quiet course than the stomping around that goes on sometimes in comps.

In saying that I am aware of my place on the course and I am more than happy to let faster groups through.

The last thing I will so is zoom around 18holes on my own. I'd rather fit 5 times as many shots into 9 holes. I find it super boring to play proper golf on my own. Much rather hit 3drives, a couple of approaches and various chips.

We are all responsible at some stage.

Years ago I was playing in a 4BBB, pace of play was going nicely until the 7th hole when three matches lost balls on a short par four.
All the matches did the decent thing and let the players behind through. but 20 players on one hole was always going to be a problem.
It caused a big log jam.
Our match eventually got through and by then were two clear holes behind the match in front........you should have seen the looks we were getting from the later matches.:o
