I think I must be around average. I've played with a few people that are so fast I have to question whether they enjoy playing golf at all. I play quicker or similar to most of my regular PPs and if anything I'd like to be able to play slightly slower as I often find myself compelled to make up time lost by a couple of occasional PPs.

What I mean by wanting to slow down is that I often skip a good read on a green, or rush into a shot because I feel it will help us avoid losing position on course. I often put the thoughts of others ahead of my own game and it costs me my score when playing with certain slow players.

The only thing I can think of that slows me down is on the greens. I am not the most confident putter but I have come up with a routine which is probably twice as long as that of my playing partners- ie 45 seconds opposed to 20-30 secs. They have jokingly highlighted the age I take to putt however I remind them that I am always first to the green!

Realistically, we are not the cause of slow play. We can easily get round our course in under 3 hours and do so regularly with no one up behind us.

I think a massive part of slow play for me is down to the course's management. We played a medal on Sunday behind 4x4 balls and it was excruciating. On a medal day I think only medal competitors should be able to play for a period of the day i.e. between 9 and 12.

I can get a bit twitchy over the ball sometimes and find it hard to pull the trigger.
Think Garcia with his re-grip thing (but not as bad)

Im aware I need help, and I'm working on it.

If you catch me doing it just prod me with a driver

Slow play was one reason I have moved Clubs.
Not that the members at old Club were inherently slow, more that the course was booked solid with mostly 4 balls with 8 minute tee times. A knock on effect of this was that a lot of people adopted the mindset of "there's nowhere to go" so no real incentive to play promptly (a word I prefer to "quickly") and very little liklehood of being called through if you are a 2 or 3 ball.

My new club is like playing with a group of whippets! There are a lot more 2 and 3 balls, and the course is overall less busy so there is a buffer to absorb any temporary hold ups like a lost ball
I have always been a brisk walker and my PSR consists of getting club out of bag, but I am struggling to keep up.
I will soon get a reputation for being Slow!

Not me Guv ... honest.

But then again... I often find that I have marched down the fairway a bit faster to speed things up and look back to see that my playing partners are still putting their clubs in their bags etc.

Sometimes I could do with a cattle prod in my bag (does that count as one of your 14 clubs or a training aid?)

Nope. If on my own i can get round most courses in about 2 and a half hours (unless held up) whilst me and my old man generally take between 3 and 3 and a half hours.

yep I can be guilty of slow play when I hit a ball in the rough or get the comp jitters and take few too many practice swings.

However playing with a guy the other week and I swear he fell a sleep before taking each of his shots. He took a lifetime just to move his arm and at one time I was tempted to prod him with my club to see if he was still breathing lol.

After a slow round a few years ago at Delamere Forest, we went around the table and each one was asked whether they thought they were slow, medium or fast. Interestingly, most thought they were fast, with a couple medium and one slow (me!) from a group of eight. At the end, others were invited to give their thoughts on others. A few noses were put out of joint...:D

The answer is we all contribute in some form or another to slow play!

Really? Never noticed that.

I've no idea if I'm slow or not.... I "think" I'm a pretty fast player but maybe some folk that have played with me think otherwise?

Four ball for medals should not be - always going to be deadly slow. Three balls for medals.

45 seconds is a long time to stand over a putt. As is 30 secs?

What is your routine?

I can get a bit 'Keegan Bradley' behind the ball too :(

Your not slow Iain. Ive never seen anyone as quick as Birchy Though!

What, you start twirling the club, spitting and giving it the one eyed stare!!?? I would hit you with a driver if you carried on like that!!

Birchy is the quickest player ever to pick up a club. By the time you've blinked he's pumped it down the middle of the fairway, club back in bag and 20 yards down the hole!!

And on 35 points, with 3 holes to go.....;)

I'm probably the quickest players I know. I could probably do with slowing down a bit, especially on the greens. Most of the time I'm deciding what to do as I'm approaching my ball and usually have my club out before I get there. Quick practice swing and give it a whack. Rinse\Repeat till done :-)

I left my last club because it was too slow. They used to pack the course with cheap green fees, especially during the week, weekends mornings weren't too bad. The year I left I don't think I managed to get a full 18 in after work because I got so fed up of waiting.

Knebworth is the opposite. It's great in the afternoons and early evenings. I can trot round in a couple of hours for 18 with a clear run.

Weekend mornings on the other hand can be a nightmare. I've had to walk off after 9 in a comp before because it took 3h !

But as I play more rounds during the week it fits me better.

I'd put myself in the average speed group. I don't have a long PSR just a good look and one practice swing. But I can get a bit slow when the pressure is starting to build up, as I need to take a deep breath and will start having a second practice swing. So next time anyone is playing with me, if I start to have 2 practice swings then you know I'm feeling it.....:mmm:

What is your routine?

Read, practice swing x2/3, line up, confirm line, confirm again, play stroke. As I said, long routine but it works for me know as I have checked several times and can putt with a bit more confidence.
