Are you top dog on the links in your family? I thought I was in mine but have recently discovered that within my Canadian relatives my second cousin once removed (son of my second cousin) is on a golf scholarship in Ohio and this week is playing the Canadian Amateur Championships. I don't know his handicap but he's clearly miles better than me! These are not people I have kept in touch with but will now keep an eye out his golf scores.

Anyway contacted him recently and he's hoping he'll make something of it as a career, he's currently close to the top 200 of the R&A's world amateur rankings. A long way to go but clearly talented.

Have you any sporty relatives who are miles better than you?

I have no idea. I have never looked into the familly tree, so really only know my aunts, cousins etc, none of whom play golf.

My handicap is however lower than my Dads. That is the important bit.

As an only child and my dad being dead I'm defintely the king of the hill. My wife, mum and in-laws or any of my cousins play and so I wipe the floor. The downside is there are a couple of family competitions at my club every year and I really wish sometimes me and the old man could give it one more shot. Cest la vie

Depends how extended my Nans, Sisters, son's step son is Greg Chalmers the left handed Australian playing on the PGA tour he came secound last week. So not a blood relative and I have never met him but seriously better than me. Apart from him Yes I am the lowest .

On Links course I think its currently me (just) but I have two nephews (one I taught at 8yrs old) who play easily off 7-9 h/c, if they really set their minds to it could make low singles or even scratch, but they dont play much Links golf, they are better than me on other courses. I have a distant relative who (Im told) plays off 4, but its not confirmed.

Just remembered I used to have an old Aunt who was a Scottish champ of some kind and member of Greenock, I played here a couple of times and I think she was low singles.

Totally agree with previous comment - the regular thrashing of immediate family members is essential - although I find equal satisfaction in beating either of 2 brothers or my dad...that said I have my fair share of defeats to endure.

It's all about the bragging rights over Sunday lunch.

Learning to loose, taking the (friendly) abuse and still being able to enjoy the competition is a healthy lesson, which younger generations are missing through lack of opportunity.....(apologies for the off thread, soap box moment there!)

so far as I'm aware, there are just me and my brother who play, and I've not yet played him.
he's ex RAF and started playing while he was still in.
I'm ex FAA and only started in 2007.

No idea of his current handicap though I think he was off 12 at one time, nor how much he plays (he's away a lot for the CAA) and we tend to meet mostly at funerals. Turning up with your bag on your shoulder get's frowned upon for some reason.

my other brother plays croquet, which also has a handicap system.

As far as I'm aware I'm the only golfer in the family.
However, my Mums uncle (my great uncle?), got down to 6 in his youth, but he died 15 or so years ago.
It was him who got me into my first club and was very patient with me, can't be too much fun for a pensioner partnering a 10 year old!

Yes I am the lowest. I have a lot of family who play, cousins, uncles etc and I am the lowest of them. Their handicaps are all in the 12-20 range. We have regular matches between two sets of cousins and the banter is great and thankfully the k's are still unbeaten.

I'm top dog, my uncle used to be pretty handy but dosen't play too much these days. My brother in law has a handicap of 18, I'll be starting to teach my nephew in a couple of years or so as he is showing an interest in the game, albeit with plastic clubs (he is 2 in November)

Nope, no way. I'm off 14 now,

I have a cousin and 2 uncles of scratch.

The cousin is was captain of his county team when he was young, balancing that with trampolining for england. Now he's caddying for David Howell, having caddied for Adam Scott, Anders Hansen, and Mcdowell.

yes, I currently play off 7, my brother who has been playing for approx 3 years is off 15, and my dad who has recently taken the game up is probably off 28 but at the moment he would struggle to play to that

Currently I am the best yes, in a family with very few golfers. However I do have an uncle who was off scratch, but sadly lost touch with the game and no longer plays except for the odd social occasion a couple of times a year.

Yes, apart from my grandad (now gone :() who got down to about 4.
My cousin plays (he's a show-off) and it gets him down that he can't beat me, even with about 8 shots!

This would be a matter of some debate in my family as the men folk are all very competitive. My dad has not played for a few years and used to be quite handy but I could probably beat him now. My brother and I are pretty close, he plays of 18 and me off 21 though he is a total bandit and because he plays cricket as well has not put a comp card in in ages. Reckon I could beat him on a good day but he would take me on a bad day.
