Hi all,

MyGolfSpy have done a couple of test recently (one test, split results) 2014 longest driver and 2014 most accurate driver. I did not read all the test blurb but they are usually pretty good at this stuff and at the very lease clear about how they get to where they get.

Test one was the longest and the SLDR came out on top but the G25 was a close second.

Test two was most accurate and the G25 came on top and the SLDR came way down in 15th.

To my mind this means that (according to the test and people used) the G25 is the overall best driver in the world right now.

I read a lot of this kind of thing and its not that I take them with a pinch of salt but I do think sometimes the results are the best results "on that day in history". With that said it did make me want to give the G25 a bash...

Your thoughts?

The tests results are skewed imo unless you use off the shelf clubs which is what they test with.

If you get fitted you could get more out of each model so its a pretty pointless exercise seeing as most people seem to get fitted nowadays??

I must say the G25 has my attention at the moment. If not that, then the strong 3 wood Ping have just released. I'll make a decision which way to go in the spring.

I get you and I have eluded to my skepticism but the data is kind of valid looked at from a wider point of view... I guess its valid within its own parameters.

I would also expect that a much larger percentage of customers buy off the shelf....

Well if you buy off the shelf it could be a good guide but that's it imo. If you go the custom route you may as well bin that as all the results will be different. The worst rated there could be the best with a custom fit.

The testers they used in each category could have a totally different swing to you even if they have same handicap range so I cant see how any of these reviews are ever relevant to an individual. So even as a guide to off the shelf buying it could be a load of crap.

I'd be interested in the stats on this, but I would imagine a majority of driver sales are off the shelf, and of those that are 'fitted' a significant portion must be in large stores where the current stock levels and staff bonus structures are as significant as the angle of attack...

Yep, I am still agreeing with you but I am still thinking performance will shine through to come degree. Sure, launch, spin and all that stuff can be altered depending on the loft of the driver or the shaft fitted but I would be shocked if there was not something to take from this data... even if its not exactly what my provocative title states. The G25 was high in both distance and acuracy, that is what I find interesting (subject to x,y and z)

Possibly correct with that but id say people getting fitting of some kind is on the rise and could overtake off the shelf at some point, who knows.

Either way taking any notice of a review done off the back of a test by somebody elses swing is still madness imo. If you are looking at buying a driver of course. Maybe for ideas of what drivers to test out this could be useful.

Looks like my switch to the G25 over my RBZ was a good one then... Haven't had much chance to test myself yet with the crap weather

I don't think they can ever be a "best in the world" because golf clubs are all very personal and will work different for every single individual

I had a hit for the G25 but it wasn't as consistent or as long as my R1 - that doesn't mean the R1 isn't the best in the world it just means for me I get better results with it

Agreed I love my cally octane black but it didn't exactly get rave reviews when it was released but it works very well for me (for £99)

I'm sure the Ping drivers always come top when Todays Golfer does a driver comparison, so they must have something going for them.

Which golf club suits which player is always a very personal thing. I am always looking to see if newer clubs can give better results for my swing.

Was tempted by the Mizuno JPX EZ driver and got to try this along with the new Cobra Amp and Callaway Xhot 2. Had tried the G25 already and it is a very easy club to hit although I found the standard stock shaft gave me a very high ball flight. However Flightscope showed that the difference in distance and dispersion compared to my existing Titleist 910 was negligible, with all of these. In fact the best dispersion was with my existing driver.

So it really is down to the individual.

I did notice on the mygolfspy survey that Titleist would not supply the 913 to be part of the test. I seem to recall this being the case on UK reviews in the past as well.

Titleist regularly don't supply clubs for testing against other clubs

Tested irons and drivers for TG and they were missing on both occasions

G25 is the best driver I've played and there has been many candidates. Long, and forgiving. Of course any test that misses on functional drivers like Titleist can never claim to be fully comprehensive
Functional ? Wash your mouth out. Titleist drivers are superb, beautiful, classic, but not functional.

I think generally that Ping Drivers are the best for club golfers. Long and forgiving. I haven't used a better driver than a Ping Rapture I don't think.

Just tried a Titleist for a bit recently and I thought it was rubbish. Taylor Made are even worse the last decent driver they made came with a steel shaft. The white one is bleeding awful.

Oh no it didn't! Panto shout
the SLDR came out top

That was the longest hitter I believe.

The best all round was the G25.

According to the tests they did anyway. Not that it matters because it might be the best for x,y or z but if your a then what good is that? :D
