Not of the mushroom or beef variety: but a type of golf competition apparently. Our club has introduced a new multi round Autumn series. It was pitched as a pairs comp, which is why I am now confused. Anyone able to offer enlightenment it will be gratefully received.

Round One was a pairs betterball with 3/4 handicap.

Round Two is the aforementioned Stroganoff. You play as a four (in a pairs comp???) with best two scores counting for the first six holes, best three for next six holes and all four for the last six holes. Anyone played in one and able to let me know if you play off actual handicap or proportional and what a good score would be?

Always thought this was called a Bowmaker.

Scoring depends on course and weather as per usual but the last six holes are crutial in this format.

You'd be looking to be 4 or 5 under par (24 = level for first 6 + 36 = level for second 6) which should give you a good chance. The idea is to not drop any points for the last 6 and hopefully pick up one or two. Can be a bit of a mare though, especially if a couple of you are having 'one of those days'.

Good fun events though.

I know what you mean about the last six. They are quite tough holes at my place with the middle six being the nicest stretch. Think we'll be looking to build our score in that mid section. Is it played off full handicap?

Re Round 2, think we played ours off full handicap. My team won with 105 points, 5 ahead of 2nd place.

It's great fun, especially when the results are coming in!

At my old club it used to be called 2,3,4 stableford.
It was played off full handicap and the winning score was generally 120+,
in fact one year the team I was in posted 132 and got beat by a shot:(

For some reason we play Bowmaker the other way round ie 4,3,2 which I do not agree with.
When played 2,3,4 the last 6 holes are bum clenching as it puts pressure on all four players to play well and not let the team down.
It's a great format.
